Report: BMW, Mercedes experiment with upscale car-sharing (Autoblog)

Dec 29th 2010 10:28PM Zipcar does not place advertisements on their premium vehicles, such as the BMW 3 series, Audi A3 and Volvo S40. (You pay a premium price, though)

Updated Malicious Software Removal tool lays the smackdown on Zeus botnet (Download Squad)

Oct 18th 2010 11:21AM I assume you also get this automatically via Microsoft Updates like all MSRTs?

I must say, the MSRT has been a pretty good idea. (Although can't believe they're still busy stamping out Conficker).

Fierr adds a more helpful "server not found" page to Firefox (Download Squad)

Oct 11th 2010 6:19PM This is good stuff - the default Firefox error page hasn't changed much in several years.

There used to be an addon that offered even more options over this one - links to Google and Coral caches (where available), a site uptime site and more.

Netflix now streams unlimited TV and movies in Canada for $7.99 per month (Download Squad)

Sep 22nd 2010 2:51PM Lee, are you from the 'Peg? Hello from Toronto!

It is great to have Netflix here, although there are a few flies in the ointment:

- Canadian startups like Zip.ca or going to feel the pinch here, not the cable/satellite TV megacorporations. Netflix doesn't air LeafsTV or Treehouse.

- Bandwidth caps imposed by the Internet service providers, incidentally owned by said cable/satellite TV megacorporations. For typical $50/mo. Internet access, you're looking at watching 30-40 hours of HD movies before punitive penalty fees come into effect - assuming you don't use the Internet for anything else. It's okay if you're a "one movie a night" type of person but this means it's not much of a TV substitute.

- The selection is at the moment rather sparse. Waterworld indeed!

The Illusionist's Dream is a shape-shifting Time-Waster (Download Squad)

Aug 6th 2010 12:33AM How can a game so charming have such horrible jumping controls?

57% of Android apps are free -- iPhone apps: only 27% (Download Squad)

Jul 9th 2010 1:38PM I'd like to point out that, since Android Marketplace uses Google Checkout for purchases, many Android developers around the world have no choice but to offer their app for free. Google Checkout only works for those with US or UK bank accounts and addresses.

They can, however, sell a paid version of their app on their own website using PayPal or other payment gateway. As a result, many adopt a freemium model and can go a long way to explaining the high percent of free listed Android apps.

Tynt Blocker Chrome extension stops Tynt from adding junk to your clipboard (Download Squad)

May 31st 2010 12:09PM My first reaction to this is, why? The Tynt function is not intrusive. If anything, it enforces proper source attribution.

Do "most people" really delete the source link?

Wondershare Time Freeze supposedly freezes your computer in time (Download Squad)

May 13th 2010 2:53PM You can also try Microsoft's own free tool, Windows SteadyState: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/sharedaccess/default.mspx Windows XP/Vista only though.

It seems more in line with what Time Freeze does - locks down a computer so that any changes done to it are wiped clean upon reboot. It's great for computers in schools or public areas where write access is required.

AA rechargeable battery shootout: Energizer, PowerGenix and Sanyo Eneloop (Engadget)

May 12th 2010 7:52PM @Cash9007 To further muddy the waters, Duracell rechargeables with white tips are OEM Eneloops. There are also green-tipped Duracells but these are an unknown OEM from China.

Screenshot tour: GMapCatcher lets you use Google Maps offline (Download Squad)

Apr 20th 2010 3:06PM My only comment is "Go McMaster!" If you did drop by Hamilton, I hope you had a chance to explore the Cootes Paradise conservation area.
