Premium butter taste test (Slashfood)

Apr 9th 2008 7:02AM I enjoy Chimay butter (both salted and unsalted) from Chimay, Belgium. It's an abbey beer from the Scourmont abbey in the south of the country. It's absolutely delicious. Chimay is also the name of a great trappist beer as well as a cheese, all from the same abbey.

No more bags: Whole Foods' latest push for green (WalletPop)

Apr 6th 2008 6:10PM I would agree that they stores aren't entirely doing this for environmental purposes. Let's not forget that these plastic bags cost money to buy and if they can get by with getting rid of the free ones, then they can sell the more expensive ones and make a bigger profit.

Many countries in the EU are adopting policies of taxing stores for plastic bags and I think it's a shame that the stores didn't fight for their customers or at least make a truly green change.

I currently live within in the EU and while these taxes are supposed to force a life-style change (always bring your own bags to the store), in the short term, people just wind up buying the bags and disposing of them. A more green solution would be to offer non-plastic solutions, such as cloth or paper bags; similar to what is available in the US. Anyhoo, just my 2cents...

World to U.S.: We don't want your sinkin' Greenbacks... (WalletPop)

Feb 29th 2008 8:54AM I'm not saying the dollar will be the dominant currency, but I certainly believe that the dollar's trend of steady decline will at the minimum stop and at least start to regain ground. I remember in the lead up to the 2004 election that analysts were predicting that the dollar would perform much better if Kerry had won.

A lot of currency trade is based on speculation and perceived confidence and as the past 5 years have shown, many investors don't have faith in the dollar. A lot of other factors at play have nothing to do with the US but I still stand by my belief that there will be a positive change by this time next year.

Feb 29th 2008 5:19AM No offense, but I'm an American who has lived in western Europe for over 5 years and not once have I come into contact with any store that accepts dollars, much less any other currency than the euro (with exception of the British pound at big ports on the north sea). From my experience traveling to the third or developing world, paying with dollars or euros is a great way to get ripped off.

I'd also argue that while the dollar might be weak now, in a year's time when the world regains confidence in America, the dollar will strengthen again. Furthermore, the Eurozone is experiencing incredible inflation while salaries aren't reflective of the cost of living. So in the next few years, the euro's growth is going to cool off as (hopefully) inflation is curtailed.

Welcome to my debt filled world! (WalletPop)

Feb 8th 2008 5:45AM Very compelling post. If you haven't read Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey, then I highly recommend it. It's an easy-to-read straightforward approach to money management. While I haven't been in debt myself, I certainly learned a lot from the book.

Also, you say you collect a lot of new gadgets and gizmos. I'd suggest that if you want to make some extra cash, try ebay-ing the things you don't use anymore. This is a great way to liquidate some of your unused assets and get you that much closer to a vacation!

The 5 most annoying programs on your PC (Download Squad)

Jan 2nd 2008 7:15AM Andrew, have you ever used a linux-based OS? I would argue that user-friendly distros such as Ubuntu or Linux Mint are the best ways to go for 97% of the population.

MS makes powerful software/OSes, which for the most part is way too powerful and complex for the average consumer who wants to go online, read/send email and do lite word processing. Ubuntu and its cousins, IMO, are exactly what the average consumer needs. They don't need MS Office and they don't need a lot of the resource-heavy commercial software that are available in Windows.

Netscape finally bows out, browsers no longer supported (Engadget)

Dec 29th 2007 5:31AM I remember that. I also remember that in my computer class they were teaching us how to use WordPerfect. By the time I got to high school everyone had switched over to IE and MS Office...

Troubleshooting 101 : How to fix the family computer and save your holiday (Download Squad)

Nov 8th 2007 8:24AM I second that about IE7 being a day late and a dollar short. From my experience with IE7, I feel that it wants to take parts from Firefox but still have the microsoft control on the product. I love Firefox, mainly because I can tell it what to do. IE7 would be much better if users could modify it to their liking.

Back on topic, I really appreciate the article. I'm that person in the family (and my girl friend's family) who's asked to fix the PCs. I'm currently trying to get them to switch to Ubuntu, but as I have only now gotten them all on FF, I have a feeling it's going to take a while.

Jul 20th 2007 1:57AM That, and for the most part, Teenagers are retarded...

but seriously as poster #3 said, when they get into a position where they have to use email in order to do their job, they'll understand the value in it.
