More proof that there is no A List (or at least if there is, it means NOTHING!) (The Jason Calacanis Weblog)

Mar 19th 2007 8:25PM Maybe all that's true, but do you not think that someone who has, say, 30mins every couple of days to write a blog post might be just as interesting as any of those people on the list? They just have no time to promote themselves, or churn out the thousands of posts required to move through the ranks. Yet maybe their voice is far more important than yours or Arrington's or Scoble's. We just don't know, because we can't find them.

The A-list system is inevitable. In every ecosystem there is a hierarchy. I just think its important that the existence of such a hierarchy is recognised by those lucky enough to be at the top of it. Scoble does recognise it, and takes it upon himself to read thousands of blog posts a day. That's clearly not a scalable system, and he shouldn't feel that he needs to do that to remain non-elitist.

Will digg die the death of 1,000 cuts? (The Jason Calacanis Weblog)

Jan 5th 2007 5:32PM I wrote about precisely this issue of verticles in a post here, albeit in the context of their podcast directory:

http://gizbuzz.co.uk/2006/digg-tries-to-take-you-down-the-tail/

The problem with the verticle approach is that it will be relatively easie to game sites with a smaller target audience, and so results could be effected. What I argued for to replace it was a sophisticated personalised recommendation engine. I explain fully in the post why that would be better.

Gifts for your Geek this year (Download Squad)

Dec 10th 2006 2:58PM How about those Flickr mini cards from Moo.com? £10 for 100.

Making a phone list for SkypeOut calls (Download Squad)

Dec 7th 2006 3:55PM Why not just use the Skylook toolbar for Outlook? That way you can make your calls using skype from within outlook, without any workarounds necessary.

Podcast Conference Call recording services (i.e. record a conference call to an MP3/WAV file) (The Jason Calacanis Weblog)

Dec 3rd 2006 3:26PM At Oratos we have two podcasts, both of which are interview-based.

We use HotRecorder, which essentially records Skype calls. It's not perfect, but it does what it says on the tin. It's only about $15, so they might well be prepared to donate.

Yourminis, yet another flash-based web desktop (Download Squad)

Nov 12th 2006 2:19PM I’ve just done an interview with Alex Bard, CEO of Goowy, for a podcast. We talk about their decision to use flash over Ajax, business models and their API that they’re launching soon.

Queen Elizabeth is on the lookout for an IT'er (Download Squad)

Oct 18th 2006 6:37PM Hate to point this out, but your use of 'barmy' is incorrect!

Barmy in fact means crazy as in clinically insane (but without negative connotations), rather than just an odd, interesting and fun experience.

I think this lack of understanding of UK slang means that Her Majesty wouldn't even consider your appointment, even if you had found out earlier.

Sun takes their press conference to SecondLife (Download Squad)

Oct 8th 2006 2:53PM Frankly, I have no time for Sun over this. There is no advantage to be found in using SecondLife, over and above doing a live webcast and making the video and audio subsequently available for downloading. This is a blatant attempt to get some kind words from Robert Scoble and some press coverage as a 'forward thinking company'.

ThemesPress - convert HTML and CSS into WordPress themes "in minutes!" (Download Squad)

Oct 4th 2006 6:01PM I actually was very impressed. I did a review of it on my blog, at http://gizbuzz.co.uk/2006/themespress-launches/ .

Tesco: Supermarket software (Download Squad)

Oct 2nd 2006 2:49PM I don't know why they don't just sell open source software. Even if they sold it for £5, they'd have almost 100% margins and it would be totally legal under the licences.

I wrote more about this at http://gizbuzz.co.uk/2006/tesco-to-sell-own-brand-software/
