If it did Bluetooth tethering with the iPhone I'd see a niche.

It it came with an AT&T network option I'd see a niche.

If it had a gigabit ethernet jack -- maybe.

If it were $600 ...

If it had a docking station ... nahh. That wouldn't do it.

Dec 2nd 2007 4:43PM I really am puzzled that nobody has created a PDF scan-to-thumb-drive standalone scanner. I swear I could design a good fairly easily.

I guess the market is thought not to exist.

The Brother MFCs with ethernet support will scan to a server that has the brother s/w installed. It's balky though, really not a great solution.

If it weren't so darned easy for scanner vendors to add this feature, I'd be tempted to create a device that would trick a ScanSnap into thinking a PC was attached. Alas, any vendor could break that market in a moment.

Sep 4th 2007 1:32PM I'm sure MarsEdit 2.0 is a good upgrade, but I'm a frequent user of Windows Live Writer (XP only). Based on my prior tests of ME I can say WLW is a vastly better product -- but it's XP only. I hope blog tool writers for OS X are using WLW as the new bar to reach.

Jan 8th 2007 10:58PM Apple has always used a bit of sex appeal to sell Macs, the MacBook is simply taking that one step further by adding a bit of kinky pain to the relationship.

Seriously, it is a stupid design. I've learned to hold my wrists in a very well aligned position, so maybe it's real use is to limit carpal tunnel syndrome. I think the edges do wear with use, I suspect some delicate buffing or scrubbing of the edge would work wonders.

Dec 24th 2006 11:05AM I think the main value is not speed or battery life, but rather hard drive longevity. The laptop is a terrible environment for a hard drive, and the key to longevity is bringing iPod drive technologies to the laptop. Spin less, reduce heat, more aggressive acceleration lockdown sensors, faster shutdown.

Hard drive failures are very expensive for Apple, they will do everything possible to double the life of the laptop hard drive (currently longevity is probably about 1.5-2.0 years average).

Oct 16th 2006 1:40PM I second those who point out this is not new. Network shares, including printer shares, have been weak since OS X 10.0. The situation improves a bit with every major revision. If you ever get a dialog offering a choice between disconnecting a share and reconnecting, ALWAYS disconnect.

It must be something wonky deep in a part of the OS nobody wants to touch. Apple keeps whittling away at the problem. I suspect 10.5 will be a bit better, and 10.6 still better ...
