Where Apple Went Wrong With Widgets (TUAW.com)
Jul 25th 2005 3:22PM Companies buy companies for technology, not ideas. Ideas, especially good ones, ought to be copied. Shouldn't the amount of goodness in the world go up? So Konfab was a great idea. Too bad for them, it was and remains a sucky implementation. Apple did it the right way, instead, and while Konfb still is ahead on some features, Dashboard won't be far behind. Maybe they could have hired the Konfab guys to work on Dashboard, but Konfab itself is too bulky. And Konfab widgets don't look better or worse than Dashboard widgets. A widget can look like pretty much anything in either system. If anything, Dashboard widgets may seem to suffer by comparison because they're much easier to make, leading to more people making them. Whileas with the effort required to make a Konfab widget, you're damn straight going to make sure it looks good.
Yahoo launches Yahoo! Widgets (TUAW.com)
Jul 25th 2005 1:11PM Dashboard is a much better implementation of the widget idea than Konfabulator. Apple buys companies for their technologies, not for their ideas, and Konfab's technology is just not up to snuff. Their program is a resource hog, compared to Dashboard, their widgets are too hard to make and too inflexible. Dashboard widgets are much more inviting to the begining programmer, given how similar they are to web pages. Konfabulator does have some nice options that Dashboard is missing, like keeping some widgets visible all the time, or attached to the desktop. That's how I used to run it. I think the Dashboard idea is better, but some widgets would be better off more in your face. No reason that can't be easily added to Dashboard, though. (It would give up the processor-saving advantage of having widgets "hibernate" when not in use though.) Props to Arlo and Perry for their great idea (and let's not pretend like it wasn't a good idea. Old school stuff like Desk Accessories don't count), but let's hope Yahoo decides to seriously slim down Konfabulator.
Yahoo to acquire Konfabulator (Download Squad)
Jul 25th 2005 12:47PM Konfabulator is cool and all, but it is a resource HOG. (Maybe 2.0 is better.) A lot of the biching about Apple's "stealing" the idea from them went away when it became clear that Apple's implementation was much better: more flexible, more powerful, and less resource-hungry. (And companies buy companies for technologies, not for ideas.) Nevertheless, especially with Konfab's being cross-platform, this is a big deal for us fans of widgets. Though it would be nice if their were a nice Dashboard-Konfab conversion kit.
No more Java apps for Apple? (Download Squad)
Jul 12th 2005 8:08AM Frankly, every Java app I've used is a dog. They look like normal OS X apps but take forever to launch and slow down your system unnecessarily. I wish Java developers would stick to writing little bitty applets and gizmos and widgets and stop pretending that it's suitable for real applications.
