Holy $#!& - Exxon Mobil posts largest corporate profit in history (Autoblog)

Jan 31st 2006 2:12PM hey, I'm not a pinko-commie nut (well..)

...but I gotta disagree with #1. You may call it a free economy, but what's up with a gigantic government subsidy of like, over $100 billion/year (min) to secure places like Iraq and Afganistan for US oil and gas interests.

It's not that I'm against the war per se, but all of us need to see these oil profits for what they are --the result of an enormous subsidy in money, material, human, and foriegn policy capital that benefits big multinational oil companies.

We are all paying... and not just at the pump. Is it worth it? Time will tell.

I'm all for keeping the US on top, but what is the real cost? For what we spend in iraq (second largest proven reserves) we could endow 15 new major research universities every 12 months.

What has changed so much since say, 1996 when gas was less than half of what it costs now? Answer: our foriegn policy and expanding the war on terror to iraq.

Driving without technology - the good old days? (Autoblog)

Jan 14th 2006 11:58AM First off, I drive and E30 (318is) and I love it. If you know how to drive, it's an incredibly rewarding car.

I think what's happened over the last 15 years is that cars and getting bigger and more powerful; but driver skill hasn't really improved. Plus, leasing, dealer financing, and the arrival of these cars on the used market mean that more people are driving bigger, faster cars than ever before.

Compare the model year of any car say, 1991 vs 2005 and you will see the difference: a maxima, vw golf, bmw 3 series (etc) ...the 2005 cars are bigger, more powerful, and handle better at higher speeds than ever (people can drive a ton faster on the highway).

So, cars, overall, are 'better', but driver training hasn't changed at all. The percentage of the population who actually understands vehicle dynamics, is probably the smallest it has ever been!

So, hence the need for all the technology. Prior to my E30, I drove an E46 330i (company car), and while a tremendous car... it was... kinda boring to drive... I don't miss it at all.
