Firefox 4 may not get silent updates after all (Download Squad)

I like that firefox would rather be convenient. First, installing to the user folder is inconvenient. Having all the programs in one place and all your personal files and settings in another place is just a lot more convenient (for several reasons that we all know). Secondly, when I don't want it to is just annoying. Not everybody has great internet connection, and I've already grown tired of having my bandwidth eaten up by something I'm not even using right now.

Those are exactly the reasons that pushed me away from chrome (plus a few extensions), and I'm glad to see firefox moving away from that. Not to mention that chrome's update software autostarts when you boot up (one more thing to stall the process of booting up) and updates in the background even if you never use chrome.

Anyway, here's to hoping it stays that way. =)

Hot on the heels of Chrome, Firefox 4 will support 'silent' in-the-background updating (Download Squad)

Aug 9th 2010 9:28AM As long as it's optional, I'm fine with it. I hate software that updates without letting me know first. That's something I love about firefox, and something aI hate about chrome (and all of google's products for that matter, they all come with "googleupdate").

I game online a lot, and I can tell that something is auto-updating when my ping doubles or triples in-game. I'd much ratter have a software that checks for updates when I'm launching it (like fierfox does right now), than a software that arbitrarily decides to start using my bandwidth and give me high ping.
