Microsoft launches Windows Azure: Cloud operating system (Download Squad)

Oct 28th 2008 9:18AM @Mark: It's all about scalability, my friend.

The first thing I asked myself was, how different is this from a regular hosting solution? From what I can tell, the benefit is that you have a little bit more programmatic control over the hardware environment. I could be wrong, but that's what I got out of it.

Either way, the benefits should be similar to those offered by EC2

Oct 27th 2008 2:55PM Thank you, Brad... I'm glad someone actually read about the product before commenting :-)

It iritates me when people see a new product (from MS or any other company) and make false assumptions without knowing anything about it. Do your homework first, people!

Oct 27th 2008 2:46PM Again, maybe I'm missing something, but where does it say you need another OS running?

I went through the keynote, and it seems to me all of the hardware is at MS, not local... so... where would you need another OS?

I mean, if you're arguing that development is Windows-specific, that's one thing... but it is WINDOWS Azure after all...

Oct 27th 2008 2:31PM Um... when did anyone say anything was IE8 only? You can run full web apps based on PHP, ASP classic etc to connect to the Azure platform, and the platform itself is a cloud... not dependant upon a browser.

How to make OS X better: taking hints from Ubuntu (Download Squad)

Jan 3rd 2008 8:35AM On Windows, AVICodec is an excellent program for figuring out which codec one needs to play a specific audio or video file. Simply right click on the file and select AVICodec, and it analyzes the file, gives compatibility and links to codec downloads. Is there nothing like that for Mac? That would more easily solve a codec problem... as said above, searching for "avi" wouldn't do you much good...

Feb 22nd 2007 12:58PM GMail... are they making people pay for beta software? Maybe I'm just not understanding what they're offering. I would never use GMail as a work account - servers are down far too often.

Interview with John Hodgman, the PC from those "Get a Mac" ads (Engadget)

Oct 5th 2006 3:38PM I have to say, as a Windows user (and as part of their target audience with these ads), I'm not impressed.

The ads appear arrogant and misleading... they're not going to make me switch. In fact, they're going to make me want nothing to do with the company (very much like Sony's comments about the PS3 make me want to stop supporting them altogether)

Macs don't get viruses, huh? So... the OSX engineers magically built this perfect piece of software that will never be tainted? Seems to me that Windows PCs (and IE) get the viruses because PCs are 95%+ of the overall computer market. That may just be my theory, or maybe common sense - one of the two.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but the commercials are PC vs. Mac right? Since when is a Mac not a Personal Computer? It's subject to the same laws that any other PC is - it comes down to the quality of the hardware and software on the PC, and I'll concede that Apple has some really nice (somewhat overpriced) PCs to offer, and a slick OS... but I can't swallow their blatent arrogance.
