Turn off your PC and BitTorrent from a Linux console with rTorrent (Download Squad)
Feb 1st 2011 10:27PM I simply place uTorrent (it doesn't need to be installed) on a separate disk, along with the various folders used for torrent storage. It runs 24/7 and has little if any impact on the PC on which it's run, or the wider LAN. At any time, it's usually seeding 6 to 10 torrents.
Also, because my PC's are typically on 24/7, I use the time I am sleeping, to allocate unused CPU cycles to a distributed research research project.
What are the first applications you install on a new computer? (Download Squad)
Feb 1st 2011 1:03PM I actually install very little, as virtually every application I use is of the 'portable/no-install' variety, located on a separate partition. The only applications I install are:
MS Office (I am compelled to use this otherwise it would be portable Open Office)
MBAM
Hitman Pro
Macrium Reflect
VirtualBox (The disk images are on a different partition)
I also have a couple of images, one vanilla and one with the above installed. Using this method allows me to be completely up an running in about 10 minutes.
Five privacy protection Firefox add-ons for Data Privacy Day (Download Squad)
Jan 28th 2011 11:40PM Personally, I think WOT is a complete waste of time. Last time I tried it, it flagged all sorts of innocuous sites as potentially bad, simply because those that had flagged the site, didn't understand what they were looking at.
I currently use, NoScript, Adblock Plus with a variety of 'Fanboys' filters, Better Privacy, Ghostery and an extension you didn't mention, RequestPolicy which is a wonderful addition to NoScript.
'Hurt Locker' Producer Officially Joins These 5 Self-Damaging Plaintiffs (Cinematical)
Jun 1st 2010 11:26PM Actually, there is no evidence that piracy adversely affects profits or jobs. In fact, if one were to spend a few minutes looking at the evidence, it would clearly show the opposite is true.
Personally I don't condone piracy and if someone is caught breaking the law, there should be an appropriate punishment. That is certainly not the case, in this money making scam, being perpetrated by this idiot producer and his lawyers.
Farewell to Facebook, at least for now (Download Squad)
May 13th 2010 11:31PM I've never really understood the compulsion people have for sharing their 'private' information with the world.
I don't think it's rocket science to understand that sites like FB will want something in return for the services they provide, even though they are seriously pushing the boundaries.
Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near these 'social' (data mining) networks but If you must join these kinds of institutions, do so with your eyes open.
Screenshot Tour: free Comodo Time Machine lets you roll back your whole system (Download Squad)
May 11th 2010 3:27AM I'd be extremely careful using this software. In principle it's a good idea, however, one glance at the Comodo forum clearly shows all is not well in CTM land.
Comodo, as another poster observed, has a nasty habit of releasing half finished software and expecting their community to do the testing, all under the guise of a complete product.
