Research shocker: genetically engineered viruses seek out, kill cancer (Engadget)

Jul 20th 2010 1:45PM @whymewhynot

Whoops, I meant "Not that this ISN'T cool or anything..."

I wish there was a way to edit posts (and for me to spell and grammar check before I hit "Submit")!

Research shocker: genetically engineered viruses seek out, kill cancer (Engadget)

Jul 20th 2010 1:44PM Umm... not that this is cool or anything, but there are so many other cool biomedical research developments that are published in hundreds of biomedical journals every month that don't get any coverage at all... why single this one out specifically (particularly since using viral vectors to infect host or xenograft cells as methods to either detect or kill cancer cells is neither new nor unique these days)?

Additionally, those pictures of the mice with the highlighted regions is based on bioluminescence (the reporter "gene" is actually a gene derived from fireflies that lights up when given a particular protein, and is incorporated in this case with the virus-infected T-cells), so that's the cool thing about this study (and many other studies that are out there) rather than the fact they used microPET. Just wanted to make sure the readers understand this...

Live from Apple's iPhone 4 press conference (Engadget)

Sure, I can buy the over-representation argument too... As for you're earlier comment, well the way I see it (whether we are talking about the iPhone 4 antenna problem, drug side effects, or any other adverse event with whatever you might be talking about) it's the unhappy people with the problems that you need to worry about, not the happy ones without problems.

When Apple does their thing right, good for them. And sure, today they made steps to address the complaints. But a 0.55% dropped call rate is high, particularly for a company that prides themselves of their products and how they market this to their target demographics. And my real issue is that in the last 22 days, they made those people who complained about their antenna issues feel patronized by their initial handling of the matter ("you're holding it wrong!"). Todays backhanded statement that "only 0.55% have complained about it" also doesn't make an affected user feel great either, particularly when they turn around and offer all 100% of users a free case. I'm sure everyone's had the experience where everyone tells you that you're wrong, only for you to be proven right, and then for those people who told you that you were wrong to dismiss the whole issue altogether as an non-issue or afterthought. Sure, may not have been important to them but it was to you.

So in my humble opinion, yes, the handled the issue but not particularly well, especially as a "user experience" for anyone who may have been affected. So I'll repeat, shame on you Apple.

I was just pointing out the fact that the reported 0.55% probably under-represents the true incidence of the problems (and I did offer a few reasons why there maybe an under-representation of the numbers). And yes, under-reporting also happens in the pharmaceutical industry.

I'm under no illusion that having an iPhone 4 antenna issue (whatever the real incidence rate is) is the end of the world. Of course you're right, we are consumers and have a choice. But as a consumer, we've also got a right to voice our opinions and make complaints, especially if you are one of the 0.55% of people who are affected. And I would think it would be nice as a society that we can put these opinions and complaints across without being patronized by Apple (who vehemently denied this as an issue at first, when they could have just said "maybe we have a problem, we'll get back to you") and have snarky defensive remarks made by fanboy trolls like you (really, was the "no-life nerds" comment necessary)?

I guess I meant "not death grip"... Sorry to you 0.55% of readers who bothered to complain about it...

Live from Apple's iPhone 4 press conference (Engadget)

Jul 16th 2010 2:40PM So, if "only" 0.5% of the 3 million iPhone 4 users have complained about the antenna problem, then that's still 15,000 iPhone 4 users that have to death grip their phone to make or keep an active call going... IMHO, that's alot of people no matter how you fudge your numbers, and that's only the people who had the inclination or motivation to complain to Apple... I bet there are users who didn't bother complaining because they either just bought a bumper (or duct tape) AND/OR they were waiting to see what Steve had to say today.

Shame on you Apple.
