News Flash: Adobe Flash coming to Windows Mobile, AIR hits 1.5 (Download Squad)
Nov 18th 2008 3:03AM Flash Player 10 for the iPhone was mentioned in the keynote. Kevin Lynch said they are working on it but it needs Apple's approval.
Connect, Discover, and Inspire at the Adobe MAX Conference (Download Squad)
Aug 28th 2007 3:31PM You get what you pay for though. I went to MAX 2 years ago and it was outstanding. It's huge conference with top notch presentations, events, free stuff and food.
When I went to the one in Anaheim, one of the evening parties was at Disney's California Adventure. MAX had private use of the park complete with open bars all along the boardwalks.
And if you want a discount, Ted Patrick has a really good one posted on his blog:

Blackle: saving the world by painting Google black (Download Squad)
Jul 27th 2007 5:07PM I've got a Greasemonkey script for Firefox that does the same thing to Google already. Works great.
I also prefer to code on a black background, I find it's easier on my eyes.

Apr 3rd 2007 1:41PM I love that the word proprietary is used to describe Flash Media Server completely ignoring that last I checked Move Networks tech was also proprietary. This also completely ignores that you need to install Move Networks player plugin to make this work.
Not to mention there are several ways to deliver bandwidth appropriate content using Flash Media Server.
Admittedly having the varying bitrates available in one file and built in player mechanisms for choosing the right stream are very nice and something Flash is sorely lacking. However, I'm not a big fan of pushing the end user to install and run a new plugin when odds are good they already have something that is perfectly capable.
I'd be interested to hear some stats on how many people do the plugin install vs. how many bail out and can't be bothered.
Can Flash be a Good RSS Player? (DV Guru)
Jan 12th 2006 5:11PM These are all great points. As the Flash format has grown in capability it has also become limited by being restrained to the browser.
If I understand correctly these are some of the issues being addressed by Adobe's Apollo project... the ability for SWF to work in the desktop environment.
Personally I love Flashpaper as a simple document format, it embeds and displays nicely on a web page, but I've always had to include links to save a PDF version because there is no way to download and view the Flashpaper file outside of the browser.
Same thing goes for FLV, Flash's video format. Although we are starting to see more standalone FLV players pop-up. Would be nice for Windows Media and/or Quicktime to incorporate FLV playback. You can get a video export add in for Premiere, etc. (at least you could for Flash MX, not sure if this exists for Flash 8 video). Definitely agree it would be nice if this was native in all the major video tools out there.
Only thing I don't agree with above, anymore anyway, is about framerates. I've not had a problem with this in along time and especially with Flash 8. And from what I've seen of Flash 8.5 there should be even fewer problems here.
Annoying Flash Behavior (DV Guru)
Jan 6th 2006 4:43PM It isn't a feature of Flash to stop playing when you switch windows. Unless you program it to work that way it will keep playing. That said, I have Google video playing in another window in the background right now as I type this.
As for using Flash as a distributable file like MP3's this is a problem. Most people's computers don't have SWF registered as a file type and thereby don't know to open a swf in your browser to play it back in the plugin. That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see this problem remedied now that Adobe owns Flash. They plan on making Flash and PDF work nicely together so I'd guess that Adobe Acrobat will be able to playback swf files sometime in the future.
