Oblivion's incomplete physics (Joystiq)
Apr 20th 2006 12:49AM Oblivion "in motion" is a sight to behold...I have no idea what all these elitists are whining about. Stepping into the sunshine and seeing leaves and grass and flora sway about, butterflies flutter by, deer leap about. Man, Oblivion IN MOTION is freaking awesome! Screenshots look buttery good, but man IN FREAKING MOTION looks better. Nuff said...
I don't think his article was necessarily bashing Oblivion, just saying what could be. The bottom line is this: "there is still a long way to go in games development". There is always something to improve upon (technically); the term "physics" is gonna be as overused as ragdoll in about 30 seconds ago...oh wait, that's now.
Geesh...no one even perfected "rag-doll" animation before we moved on! What's up with the instant "I once had a skeletal structure and now I'm pure rubber in death" rag-doll model that EVERY freaking developer uses?
I just secured the Umbra sword in the game...I had a huge stack of Paralysis Poisons and I kept bashing the lady wielding Umbra with a poisoned edge. She beat the crap out of me enough up to the point, so she had to sit there frozen while I wacked the hell out of her for 10 minutes. All she could do was twitch her eyes about as I spilt her blood all over the rock walls of her eventual grave site!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA....THE UMBRA IS MINE!

Apr 19th 2006 9:17PM Wait a minute...I thought that Hiro Protagonist was J Allard's handle on XB Live? So either someone stole hiw nick, or J Allard is posting in the comments at Joystiq? Am I off the mark here? Why has no one else mentioned this?
Next Oblivion downloads promise more than horse getups (Joystiq)
Apr 5th 2006 7:17PM Yeah, I'd pay 2.50 for this kind of extra content...but there is so much in this game, I'm surprised at how quickly Bethesda is pushing this kind of add-on stuff out. I would have expected at least 3 months or something - seriously, who here has exhausted the amount of stuff you can do in this game?
OTAM...the Halo maps only EVENTUALLY became free...I had to drop 20 bones or something to get my hands on them when they first came out. They were NOT free to begin with (well, I think a couple of them were free at first!
BTW, Oblivion is quickly ascending the ranks of "Best damn game I have ever played" - thx Bethesda for a fantastic experience!
Oh...one more thing Bethesda...can you work on optimizing the frame-rate issue on the 360 instead of developing new quests right now? Ok...thanks for listening... :)

Mar 28th 2006 12:20AM Looks pretty good...completely probable. Kind of looks like something from out of Oblivion on my 360 :)

Oblivion infinite gold cheat undermines Tamriel society [update 1] (Joystiq)
Mar 26th 2006 2:59PM ngS ... this game will NOT let you down. There are a few whiners posted complaints everywhere they can, the majority aren't posting at all because they are glued to their sets stuck in the land of Oblivion!
Oblivion infinite gold cheat undermines Tamriel society [update 1] (Joystiq)
Mar 26th 2006 2:33PM This game isn't buggy like all these whiners are making it out to be. I've played 15 hours, and haven't ran into a single bug! I'm not kidding...sure there are performance hitches occasionally, but after playing the thing for an entire day, my super hot Xbox needed a quick reboot to get things back in line. I'm sure there are some exploits, glitches, bugs - I'm just saying I have not encountered them. I'm not quite sure why people are shocked when you have thousands of people combing over every inch of a massive game, with a massive amount of stuff to do, and we are shocked when people start running across some exploits like this.
Of course, no knock on Joystiq, I appreciate the humor behind their sarcastic post. If this was an MMO, and was an easy exploit to take advantage of, it would indeed be a bigger problem. I would have to create a character simply for the sake of creating hundreds of illegitimate off-spring all over Cyrridil - LOL!
Metareview - Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Joystiq)
Mar 26th 2006 3:11AM Ouch ZeroCorpse...back off a bit my friend. Most games haven't required a reading of a "manual", but I have indeed picked it for this game from the very beginning. It's not that useful in giving strategies or much other than just a quick overview. I don't have the collector's edition, but part of me wishes I did to get a hold of the additional info. I never saw any lock picking tutorial other than when you first got a chance to pick a lock on a chest in the game opening cave crawl (where you pick an easy lock).
I did however notice the subtle semi-circle bar above the reticule when I was playing tonight, and to that I was greatly pleased.
Playing for a few hours tonight led to becoming a brawler in the arena, going on a joy-ride aboard a boat with pirates (of course, I was the unintended guest), finishing the rescue of Kyvath (sp?), joining the fighters guild, and more. To end the night I watched the sunset over the hills looking out from a bridge just outside Imperial City. The day-night cycles are awesome, as well as the weather - with thunderstorms rollin through occasionally, to overcast days, or your normal sunny weather. I'm sure some coder spent a good amount of time on the detail of the sky in the game, and will probably be one of the most overlooked portion of the graphics! - Another subtlety I noticed tonight was leaves changing colors. If there are snow storms and barren trees in the winter - I'm gonna cry (j/k); but this kind of engrossing attention to detail is indeed incredible.
Metareview - Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Joystiq)
Mar 25th 2006 7:02PM I don't normally have the patience to play this style of RPG. I must say that Oblivion has succeeded in pulling me in - in a huge way no less. At first I tried a few side-quests to get some gold, but those adventures so far have proven a bit difficult to complete, and were starting to bore me. So off I went on the main quest, and there in I was drawn in. After going to a priory in a small town to the west, you get a horse, which you have to ride horseback west to a small town. Despite frequent, brief, load times on the trip, it was just amazing how huge the world is.
Yeah, it's easy to "nitpick" when there is so much going on, I am just stunned at the level of detail, content, etc that seemed like an army of hundreds of artists and coders poured over for years. Everything is gorgeous - even the damp sewers and dungeon crawls look good.
I have explored so little of the world so far, and I just look forward to getting around and seeing new places. I would have to agree that Imperial City is my least favorite city so far, but that's because it lacks an organic artistry that other towns have - but by no means is it not beautiful in certain ares. Take a walk in the arboretum area and you'll understand what I mean.
There are such overwhelmings that it's hard to knock on certain things. The level of complexity does lead to frustration. I still can't figure out how to properly do lock-picking, and I don't get how you level up certain spell powers. I opted to abandon the bow and arrow in favor of using ranged spells, but I've been using a fireball attack since I started that just doesn't pack much punch, and I have no idea how I get a more powerful ranged attack yet. A few of the side-quests are going nowhere, simply because I can't break into a house, or a person doesn't trust me enough to give me more information. Fighting is satisfying, but my only big complaint is the lack of feedback as to how much damage you are inflicting on your enemies - an important piece of intel necessary to manage your spells and potions.
I've only been able to play for a little over 10 hours, so I'm not worried too much at some of these early frustrations. I've closed a Gate of Oblivion already, rescued an heir, been to a fortress high in the snowy mountains, began looking for info on a secret cult, and slain two people in the arena. I've been to maybe 4 of the 16 major cities, and I've only spent a lot of time in the Imperial City. This game offers the most cohesive persitant world I have ever seen in a video game, and I look forward to continued enjoyment in the months ahead.

Feb 27th 2006 11:37PM A little piece of my male-hood dies every time I see a
100 pound chic take down a 200+ pound guy while wearing high-heeled sandles in a movie.
No sir, I do not want another.
Call of Duty 2 multiplayer patch on the way (Joystiq)
Feb 27th 2006 7:47PM I think this is going to come too late...BUT, with the biggest user-base of any 360 game so far, I could be wrong. With the "march" of March releases just a couple weeks off, I don't think the first batch of games is going to compare (GRAW, BF2, Oblivion). Or maybe I just want my GRAW NOW! At least a demo please?
