Pandora, Amazon, other third-party apps demoed on Palm Pre (Engadget)
Apr 2nd 2009 12:57PM Palm had some pretty big balls to put themselves in the position they're in. Obviously a product like this has been in development for quite some time. Everyone was seeing Palm circling the toilet, thinking they were stuck without a plan, while they knew they had WebOS (and the Pre to showcase it on) all in development. For a while there (especially when we saw that wannabe laptop Palm Folio) it was a serious case of "Palm who?"
Now I'm not saying the Pre will fail, or the Pre will be bigger than sliced bread. Who knows? Palm looks like they are in a good position with WebOS and the Pre. It's a nice looking product with capabilities that will appeal to a lot of people. It would even appeal to many more if it was made in Cupertino and was called the iPre.
I love the comments about the number of apps released for iPhone and Pre/WebOS. One of the most reduculous iPhanboi comments there ever was since we're talking about an unreleased device. You know... the Pre has the exact same number of released apps as the iPhone3G2 and WinMo 8. (actual titles may vary, but I bet I got the first letter right on the Apple device).
BackTrack: A penetration testers toolset (Download Squad)
Jul 16th 2008 9:56AM Strange. I've had the completely opposite experience. While I love the users-helping-users through forums, etc., these exist for commercial programs also. So... no advantage there. It sure is nice to have a central point of contact for support (and even a warranty) when there are problems.
This is why the "total cost of ownership" for open source programs isn't as low as "free for download" would seem to make it.

May 14th 2008 2:14PM Arrghh.. Why the hype anyway? I'll be holding out for the US availability of the HTC Diamond. All the same functions, the great looks, and expandability with thousands of existing (and often free) programs. All without the premium $$$ demanded by Cupertino.
