In a MacDefender world, practice constant vigilance (TUAW.com)

May 26th 2011 1:12AM Saying we border on collaboration with malware developers is ridiculous. Please see my comment above. Who informs the populace of applications outside of Apple's Mac App Store that are safe to download and install?

We do.

In a MacDefender world, practice constant vigilance (TUAW.com)

May 26th 2011 1:10AM The problem is what constitutes "untrusted" software? Obviously the Mac App Store is vetted by Apple and trusted, right?

But what about applications like Transmission? Quicksilver? The average consumer may have never heard of Panic, but Transmit is a great app.

The point is that computers require a certain level of knowledge and training, and it's important not to take vulnerabilities in any system for granted. There's no need to cry on the inside, really.

TomTom GPS app offers good maps, terrible interface (TUAW.com)

May 25th 2011 6:27PM "And can we PLEASE allow for address entry similar to Google Maps? It shouldn't be that hard to parse a string of text to understand the address..."

Amen to that. Unlike many of the crankypants on this post I have found Navigon to be a great app, but that one issue drives me crazy. No pun intended.

France Telecom CEO talks SIM cards, next iPhone, apps and more (TUAW.com)

May 24th 2011 10:12AM I have heard that, yeah.

Adonit Writer: Taking iPad keyboard cases to a higher level (TUAW.com)

May 18th 2011 11:02AM Actually, we don't do it that often and I agree it can be insulting. In this instance the entire review went out prematurely. We're in the process of fixing now.

FWIW standard practice is to tag link something if it provides value for context -- I linked "Lodsys" today because it's important to show a sequence of events based on our extensive coverage. In this case, "wireless keyboard" didn't need the tag link and I agree with you. But we don't do it expressly to "goose" our pageviews, which are pretty stellar to begin with ;-)

iOS developers hit by patent infringement complaints for using in-app purchase (TUAW.com)

May 13th 2011 11:54AM Because anyone can file anything against anyone at any time. Only then do you get your day in court to decide whether the case has any merit.

Also: it's a dick move full of cowardice -- because something tells me the lawyers in this case know Apple legal would have ground them into fine paste had they filed directly against Apple.

iOS developers hit by patent infringement complaints for using in-app purchase (TUAW.com)

May 13th 2011 10:59AM There is, yes, or progress would be seriously derailed. But it is close to a decade, which in this industry can be detrimental. Worse, companies can file patents on things as a sort of protection and even worse, some companies just file patents as a way to make money off of violators later. They actually "produce" nothing. Gaming the system for profit, the American way.

Thumbs-on review of ThinkGeek's JOYSTICK-IT for iPad (TUAW.com)

May 13th 2011 7:22AM From the little time I spent using the Fling I consider it better in almost every way.

Thumbs-on review of ThinkGeek's JOYSTICK-IT for iPad (TUAW.com)

May 13th 2011 7:13AM The word Joystick doesn't need to be all caps. It's silly. IBM and the others you mention *mean* something -- there's a purpose to the caps or intercaps. In this case, ThinkGeek (see, I used their intercap) is simply using all caps for the sake of using all caps. We're also talking about 3 letters vs. 7, which means a lot.

It look like garbage on the page and I won't have it on my pages. Interesting to see the responses, however.

The difference between Apple and Google at the Senate hearings (TUAW.com)

May 10th 2011 7:59PM The point being Tribble is an engineer, Apple (as Steve Jobs has said) is an engineering company.

Google sent a lobbyist.

The rest is an exercise for the reader to determine the motives behind sending each man to testify about privacy.
