Texas House approves nation's fastest speed limit at 85 mph (Autoblog)

Apr 8th 2011 12:28PM It may make sense for low density states like Montana and Texas (excluding major cities), but it won't work in California. Ask anyone: Los Angeles has the most unpredictable and inexplicable traffic. The highway system is knotted with too many concurrencies, shared carriages and consecutive, close interchanges. Even if driving at 85 was just as efficient as 75, 65 or 55, you will still end up wasting considerably more fuel because you will waste more energy braking for random zombie bottlenecks and subsequently accelerating to a high speed you will only be able to maintain briefly. The same principle also applies to areas in the US with geographic and capacity limitations, especially those heavily dependent on bridges, tunnels and tolls. (For example, Long Island is plagued with all of these problems.)

If California did raise speed limits, it should consider re-tooling every primary freeway as a special local-express highway system with 3 separate two-to-three lane carriageways in each direction. (1) Inner Express lanes for traffic bypassing ALL exits and junctions at 85mph with crossovers to middle carriageway "High Speed Efficiency" lanes (coined H.S.E.) before major junctions. (2) H.S.E. lanes for freeway transfers and splits at 65mph. Crossovers are possible to Express and Local carriages immediately following an interchange transfer. (3) Outer Local lanes for local exits only at 50mph. Drivers must crossover to H.S.E. for highway junctions. No dedicated H.O.V. lanes, except on popular monitored local exit/entrance ramps. (This is actually a huge advantage in this setup.)

AP looks into what factors determine gas prices (Autoblog)

Mar 11th 2011 6:32PM Contrary to Tea Party, Republican and Ayn Rand doctrine, this is a clear example of what Adam Smith was talking about when he addressed the flaws of the free market's ability to set prices and the need for proper government regulation in regards to pricing commodities.

AdSpotting: Ford goes global with Focus, but will it entice? (Autoblog)

Mar 4th 2011 3:56PM Yea, but from the looks of it, the new Focus seems like it will be a really good car.

Chrysler looking to boost Japanese sales by 21% with launch of new Grand Cherokee (Autoblog)

Feb 25th 2011 5:24PM The best selling car in Japan is the Toyota Prius. So, yea… it's not the market for SUVs/Trucks. Maybe some crossovers can make it Big in Japan, but my bets are on a German luxury make like BMW X1.

Compare that to the US where the Ford F-Series.

2012 Ford Focus officially certified at 40 mpg highway (Autoblog)

Feb 25th 2011 1:33PM Also, the Elantra interior isn't as polished as it looks. It's a notch better than Chrysler's fake-luxury. It's like a McMansion. Good looking but hallow.

I prefer Ford's "it's actually a lot more polished in person than it looks." Example: the Fusion Hybrid and Fiesta Hatchback (especially with leather seats).

Video: David Letterman buys a Ford Fusion on air, Nissan Juke gets dissed (Autoblog)

Feb 24th 2011 6:34PM The Fusion was just revamped significantly in 2010. The hybrid is only in its second year. I expect Ford to merely update the interior for MyTouch in 2012. The current hybrid with navigation screen setup looks pretty similar to new generation MyTouch setups because it makes use of sam the LCD dashboard hardware so they don't have to revamp the interior much.

Ford will probably first introduce a new Mondeo in 2012/13 in Europe, possibly under a new name, before it hits the states. It's possible that it would be sold alongside the Fusion for at least the first one or two model years. Perhaps it won't even bother updating the Fusion at all in order to sell it as a fleet vehicle at a discount, because I bet the new Mondeo will be more expensive than the model it replaces (just like the Focus).
