Why 3rd party apps don't look like Windows Media Center Edition (PVR Wire)

Dec 9th 2006 2:42AM I remember reading somewhere that the display mode for 3rd party apps is different than MCE itself - an HTML renderer or some such. That's why apps like MCEWeather, while wonderful, look more jaggedy than the built-in MS tools (like Radio, for example).

The Five: The 5 Most Underrated TV Shows Of All-Time (AOL TV)

Sep 6th 2005 2:46PM "My Life and Times" Six episodes, half-hour thoughtful science-fiction-themed emotional drama. Doomed from the start, I guess. From IMDb: "Ben Miller was an elderly man living in a nursing home in the year 2035, who frequently reminisced about his past life in this critically acclaimed series. Each episode was set in a different year, and detailed Ben's days as a college student, his courtship with wife Rebecca, and other important moments in his life." Opening narration: "I can't say that I've seen everything but I've seen a lot. I've seen footsteps on the moon and seen myself stumble. I've seen fear and did my darndest not to be afraid. I've survived the nineties and braved the millennium. I've loved and lost and learned to love again. And I've learned that life is an adventure. You have to hold on and let it carry you away. I've let it carry me to me to the year 2035 and I'm here to tell the tale. I'm Ben Miller and this is my life and times." Anyone else remember this classic?

Time Waster of the Day: Sudoku (Download Squad)

Aug 17th 2005 11:35PM Try this freeware downloadable version: http://www.easton.me.uk/tcl/sudoku/ It says it's free for personal use (Windows only). It doesn't have the guess-recording feature, but you can generate an infinite number of random Sudoku puzzles, and play at your leisure...very nice.

Mel Gibson ashamed of gay kiss (Cinematical)

Jul 17th 2005 12:00PM As a gay man, I'm also ashamed that a blatant homophobe like Gibson played a gay character in a movie. Of course, he's not ashamed of playing characters who gleefully slaughter people...no, not at all!

Revisiting Wonka (Cinematical)

Jul 8th 2005 7:35PM Charlie's chosen, I think, because: a) He behaves (except, crucially, in the Fizzy Lifters room - and that's at Granpa's suggestion). b) He's not greedy. Augustus is a glutton for food, Veruca wants material goods, Mike Teevee wants to watch TV and be on TV. Charlie is the one good-hearted kid. c) Critically, he is the one child who doesn't fall for the phony competitor's bribe. We never actually see this, but every time the other kids win a ticket, the competitor (Schicklgruber in the book, also a code-name for Hitler) shows up to whisper in their ears. I'm betting each of those kids made a deal with the guy to sell out Wonka for the secret of the Everlasting Gobstopper if they could get their hands on it. I'm not sure how much authority figures into it.

Why Ebert is right about War of the Worlds (Cinematical)

Jul 3rd 2005 1:09PM First of all, you really should put "SPOILERS AHEAD!" for those who haven't seen the movie. I saw the movie last night, and feel that the ending was a letdown, even though I'm familiar with the source material. No matter how up close and personal Spielberg tried to make this film, it's still a CGI FX spectacle. And, that being said, an ending that's as subtle as the one presented simply doesn't work. Furthermore, it's not foreshadowed (unless you call the opening narration foreshadowing) at all until Cruise arrives in Boston and notes the alien roots are turning grey - nearly at the end of the movie. Given the amped-up whiz-bang nature of the movie, the quiet ending does not do the trick. And I'm not sure what would.
