Canonical causes a ruckus by asking which new apps users want on Ubuntu (Download Squad)

Jan 17th 2010 11:56AM See, I don't think they have any intention of actually brining Photoshop or iTunes or Steam to Ubuntu in an official sense, I think they just want to find out what kind of apps people are looking for and what they would like to see in Ubuntu.

The fact is, as others have noted, Adobe has absolutely no incentive to try to develop Photoshop for Linux. None. And frankly, as Mac users still have to wait for CS5 to get 64-bit support (yeah, yeah, I understand that they are having to basically rewrite half the app -- I don't care, it's annoying when a big part of your demographic can't utilize more RAM in freaking Photoshop), I don't want the already taxed teams spending time on a platform that won't embrace it anyway. But that's just me being selfish.

Using Snow Leopard's Image Capture app, or how to clean up a room (TUAW.com)

Dec 12th 2009 10:35PM I hear you, but in Steve's defense, he said that these boxes are take up a whole spare bedroom. There's a limit to how much you can save. I mean, I'm all for saving the really important albums (especially if they are carefully dated and have descriptions, but just knowing how many photographs are in my parents basement (and I mean boxes and boxes full of photographs that have probably been viewed once or twice), it isn't practical for every person to keep every photo from every family member for all of eternity. Especially if they can be digitized so that the best photos can then be grouped and printed and also be searchable and e-mailed or shared with family members over Flickr.

Thanks for the tip Steve!!

Dec 12th 2009 2:38PM I'll throw in my favorites:

iStat Pro: Still the best system monitor tool out there, bar none.

Delivery Status: Along with Deliveries for the iPhone, this is my godsend, as I get lots of packages and it keeps stuff in sync across systems and platforms

Junior Mint: Gotta keep track of my site stats

Before there was Boot Camp, there were DOS Compatibility Cards (TUAW.com)

Dec 10th 2009 1:16PM We had these in our Mac Lab in middle school. We were so psyched to get a whole lab full of PowerPC's (Performa 6100s I think), complete with DOS card in each system. Too bad they were such dogs as actual machines -- but it was super neat to press I think it was CMD (then known as Open Apple), Option, W and go into Windows 3.11.

My friend Lee and I even installed Windows 95 on a few machines, until we learned what software licensing was and how we couldn't do that. Oh, good time!
