Luxand Blink now lets you use your face to log in to 64-bit Windows 7, too (Download Squad)

Aug 4th 2010 1:55AM I can't wait until people with their photos as login icons start installing this. Then you'll only need a mirror (or cell phone camera) to get into their machine :P

Why Ubuntu Netbook fails in real life (Download Squad)

Jun 8th 2010 9:28PM Did you install it with WUBI? Installing wubi is like running ubuntu as an application INSIDE windows. It' nearly impossible for ubuntu to run faster than xp in that scenerio because XP is till running.

Erez: Please don't post comparisons of ubuntu vs windows if you are using wubi. Do a proper full install (separate partition, etc) THEN compare them!

Computer solves 400-piece puzzle in 3 minutes; scary implications for photo manipulation (Download Squad)

May 24th 2010 7:38PM Does anyone else feel that 3 minutes is pretty high? You would think comparing the pixels on the outer edge of each piece would allow for a pretty accurate pairing. The color of the pixels on either side of a "cut" should be pretty darn close.

To compare each side to each side of each other piece is only (400*300*4*3) 1915200 connections.
In 3 minutes, that would be 0.000093985 seconds (0.093985 miliseconds) per try. That's not even counting not having to compare sides that have already had a match found.

Valve's Steam gaming service rolls out Mac version, with free Portal! (Download Squad)

May 13th 2010 5:59AM For those waiting for the linux version (myself included), grab a portal key NOW. They are free for all platforms (which are pc/mac right now), but ALL steam keys work on ALL steam platforms/versions ALWAYS.

I just grabbed a free portal "mac key" even though i don't own a mac. it will work in windows right now and when the linux version comes out, that same key will work there.

short-version: Now matter what platform you have (windows/mac/linux/etc) grab a key. If steam EVER releases a client for your environment (xbox/ps3/etc) that key will work there as well.

Apr 12th 2010 6:58PM Getting 127.0.0.1 from a college DNS and my home (freshly installed linux machine yesterday). A whois lookup shows the account was suspended, so I'm guessing their registrar set their ip to 127.0.0.1 :P

Google rigs search results to help prevent suicide (Download Squad)

Apr 6th 2010 3:40PM I don't really consider this rigging (unless they are changing the order of the below results). This is pretty much what they do when you search for weather, news, stocks, etc. They are just adding a little "this may help you out" result at the top.

Early benchmarks in: Apple iPad faster than Google Nexus One (Download Squad)

Apr 6th 2010 2:59AM @sodapop Because the iPad is litterally about 4 to 8 times the size of a phone and has about half the hardware capabilities.

The nexus (or any smartphone/pda for that matter) needs to fit inside a MUCH smaller compartment with half again as many parts (3g, bluetooth, usb) while running on a MUCH smaller battery.

It's like releasing a news article about your average PC being faster than most laptops, well duh!

iPad launch has publishers scrambling to offer HTML5 video (Download Squad)

Mar 31st 2010 4:48PM Please stop calling the html5 video tag a format, it is NOT a format, it is a medium. ogg vorbis and h264 are formats.
