The reason ports got taken out was to save space internally. More space = more places to cram chips.

Apps are supposed to automatically scale to the available screen size. Notice that when you're making a call, if you quit the Phone app and go to any other app, the app will resize to allow for a larger status bar. If the app doesn't automatically scale, then it's the developer's fault.
