Mar 13th 2012 12:32PM @r0bster78 You seem to be missing the most important thing: Nobody would be jumping all over Phil Fish if he'd just had the decency to be polite and considerate to the guy who was asking the question.
They might have even overlooked the fact that it takes a lot of stones to trash other people's work when your own little overhyped tech demo has yet to see the light of day. But in the end, people aren't castigating him for daring to think that the Japanese game industry is in trouble. People are castigating him for expressing that opinion in the most dickish manner possible.

And since Phil decided that being "refreshingly" rude to industry professionals was an acceptable tenor for discussion, it shouldn't shock and surprise him that the internet has chosen to be "refreshingly" rude right back to him. The fact that he doesn't seem to be nearly as good at taking it as he was at dishing it out speaks volumes to me.

Fish brought this on himself because he never learned basic etiquette. You think Japanese games suck? Fine. Say "I haven't been such a big fan of Japanese games in recent years. I wish I could say otherwise, but it feels like a lot of the innovation and ambition has gone out of the industry, and that's been unfortunate to see."

You don't say "Yeah, you guys all suck." That's not voicing an opinion. That's being a dickweed. And the funny thing about being a dickweed to people? It means people won't hesitate to be a dickweed back. It means people will say stuff like "Phil Fish can take his gimmicky, still-unreleased Cave Story knockoff with no substantial gameplay to speak of and shove it where the sun doesn't shine."

Good luck with that. You'll also excuse me if I don't agree that the raging manbaby who's belittled his fellow industry professionals and screwed potentially far more deserving games out of IGAF recognition is a "great guy", especially when his main (read: only) significant accomplishment is stealing Cave Story's art style, Crush's gameplay, and George Broussard's project management skills.
