Ask Engadget HD: Is there a good wireless HDMI option yet? (Engadget HD)

Feb 11th 2010 8:04PM Wire runs are not always possible, and HDMI is not as reliable as some of you may believe. Anything over 16 feet is questionable whether it will work. I do professional HT install, and have run into issues where long (35, 50, even 75 foot) HDMI runs just don't work. There's too much signal loss and the cable becomes worthless. Even HDMI boosters are recommended that you put them (at maximum) every 30 to 35 feet and daisy chain. This means that if you want to go 50 feet, you need to have the cable go through the wall, come out so you can plug in a booster, then go back into the wall and either to your TV or another outlet. It just isn't reasonable. A lot of the time you are seeing ethernet cable run with "balluns" (HDMI ends converted to connect to ethernet cabling) attached, but they don't always work either.

Wireless HDMI is new, but hopefully takes off. I haven't gotten to play with one yet, but I've heard good things about the Gefen and Rocketfish units, although range on them doesn't seem to be very long (again, up to 35 feet). Hopefully they work well, and the tech improves for better distances. Just don't bank on that long HDMI cable always being your best option!

NHL Arcade is the Xbox Live Deal of the Week (Joystiq Xbox)

Nov 16th 2009 4:44PM The demo for this was sweet, but I couldn't see myself spending $10 on it. $5 is the sweet spot for me and most arcade games.

Figures that this comes along while my 360 is getting it's second round of RRoD fixes. Thank goodness for online marketplace payments (I REALLY wish Sony would get with that program...)

Joyswag: Call of Booty: Prestige Edition (Joystiq)

Nov 12th 2009 8:07PM When I was young, I got pretty sick and got a fever so high that I was halucinating. Every time I would close my eyes to try to rest, I would see a re-creation of the old Looney Tunes cartoon where Daffy Duck is a villian and runs around painting moustaches on everything, while Porky Pig (dressed as a cop) chases him around and beats him on the head with a billy club. I kept seeing them run around, painting moustaches on all my belongings close to my ceiling and beating each other senseless. At the time it was horrifying, but it's horribly hilarious now.

First Halo Waypoint programming revealed (Joystiq)

Nov 3rd 2009 10:07AM Got to check this out with the Dashboard Preview. Went in just to check it out...wasn't really all that interested. The Avatar Rewards caught my eye right away, and they're actually pretty nice. Especially cool to have the Guilty Spark Accessory to fly around my Avatar (just because I know no one else in my friends list has it...lol).

It's a brilliant piece of marketing, imo. Every acheivement whore is going to be checking this out trying to figure out what they're missing to get these extra ranks. It's making me want to go back and play through some of these campaigns to pick up the few I'm missing to grab some new rewards.

Looking forward to seeing if Legends is as entertaining as it could be. That's honestly the only thing I've seen so far that would make me keep coming back (once I finish my rewards of course).

NintendoWare Weekly: Zombies Axed My PictureBook (Joystiq)

Oct 26th 2009 12:57PM I'm pretty sure that Zombies Ate My Neighbors is one of the best, most under-rated games of the pre-3D era. I played the hell out of that game FOREVER. Ended up buying a second copy after my first wore out. (Seriously.) Wish I still had my Wii, because I would be purchasing this.

Joyswag: Brutal Legend and Eddie Riggs statue (Joystiq)

Oct 15th 2009 10:29PM I'm pretty sure Lemmy's moustache would destroy all who dared get in it's path.

Poll: What part of your home theater is getting upgraded this holiday season? (Engadget HD)

Oct 12th 2009 1:43PM I voted speakers, but specifically it's the subwoofer...I'm finally going to add one in! Couldn't afford to buy the whole system at once (currently rocking a Yamaha RX-V665 and the Klipsch Quintet III speakers) so I bought the speakers first, then the receiver (mostly because I heard about Yamaha's new line coming out right when I was about to pick up the RX-V663), and now I'm ready for my sub. Probably just a 10" (smaller house with two small children and a wife who's not big on loud noises) but I'm not sure which way I'm going to go, because I was planning on picking up Klipsch's Synergy Sub-10, but it doesn't seem to be made anymore! Have to see what they've got for a replacement...

Tim Schafer lends some LOLs to Fallon on Late Night (Joystiq)

Oct 4th 2009 12:46AM They do it that way because that's how the industry does trailers. It's just clips.

You have to remember that in most games the cutscenes aren't very long, and they usually give away key info. This means it's either going to be a SPOILER (which would just piss everyone off) or it's going to seem so out of context that it wouldn't make sense (and you'd have to use a SPOILER to explain it...so the loop remains).

I would like to see the gameplay spots become a little longer though...show the leadup to Eddie Riggs jumping mid-air and bringing the axe down on the demon druid...show us a longer clip of his movement and attacks in a chain instead of quick flashes where you can't tell if it was cool or not because you're fighting a seizure. That's what I'd like to see.

Swag Saturday: Guitar Hero 5 with Logitech Wireless Drums (PS3) (Joystiq)

Oct 3rd 2009 10:42PM If all goes according to plan, I will be rocking out to Brutal Legend while my 2-year-old son rocks out on these Logitech Wireless Drums (in his "play room", of course...you know I can't play this with the damn language filter on!)

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup's cup runneth over (Joystiq)

Sep 26th 2009 11:12PM Dipswitch actually made me laugh out loud, which I rarely do. I don't even normally vote for the comics, but I had to vote this week. Truely awesome.
