Npacked software install manager is like Synaptic for Windows (Download Squad)
Feb 8th 2011 11:09PM @FranklintheTurtle But it would make more sense if such a program at least checked if it already had a copy of the program from before - either by version number of filesize.
If it said to itself "OK next I have to get the latest version of Open Office. That's v3.3 at 140MB. Do I already have that? Yes I downloaded it last month and already have that installer - I'll use that"
Makes sense for it to keep a copy of the latest installer that redownloading it if it already has the latest version in its archive.
Npacked software install manager is like Synaptic for Windows (Download Squad)
Feb 8th 2011 4:54PM When I download a program I always save the installer in a big folder so that if I ever need to reinstall it I have it quickly. Also if I have to reinstall windows I can install all my old software without having to redownload everything.
I'd like to see one of these managers that saves all the installers and keeps them nice and organised rather than deciding to redownload everything.
Droid Explorer lets you manage your rooted Android phone from Windows Explorer (Download Squad)
Oct 25th 2010 4:29PM I tried this a while back. I didn't read that it needed the phone to be rooted or I wouldn't have bothered.
But I'm glad I did because I found that although most of it didn't work, the screenshot and recording functions worked fine on my Wildfire and I made a couple of videos.
Microsoft migrating 30 million Live Spaces blogs to WordPress.com (Download Squad)
Sep 28th 2010 5:14AM "though it now allows Microsoft to focus on software for blogging (Live Writer) instead of worrying about maintaining a blog platform"
Surely the only reason Microsoft maintained products like LIve Writer was to encourage users over to sites like Live Spaces. It was the default when you first ran Live Writer.
I'd say this move puts Live Writer under threat rather than being positive for it.
Songbird 1.8 update brings broader device support, OS X syncing (Download Squad)
Sep 3rd 2010 2:38PM I've been following Songbird almost from the beginning with high hopes (and now a little frustration) at their pace and priorities.
Have they managed to integrate 'proper' podcast support yet or have they just given up in favour of their weird subscribe to a page thingy?

Mar 16th 2010 5:48PM I REALLY want to like new versions of IE.
I'm not tied to the past - I remember how bad IE was and I remember how it was basically abandoned for years while other browsers excelled.
But if they come out with a good product I want to be able to use it.
And yet one thing will always stop me - They still insist in integrating it deep into Windows. Until they yank it out and make it a stand-alone program, I will never ever trust it.
Trust No Exe Blocks Application Startups - Windows Only (Download Squad)
Aug 10th 2008 1:53PM When I tried using this on XP about 8 months ago my computer kept crashing. Once when I used IEtab in Firefox and also when I used several other programs. I think I decided at the time that it was any time a program tried to use IE as so many applications do.
Uninstalling it didn't work. Ended up having to do system restore
Mozilla brings Twitter, RSS, other messages to Firefox with Snowl (Download Squad)
Aug 8th 2008 6:49AM @Iampriteshdesai
I'm aware of it and have used it in the past.
I'd just prefer Firefox to handle extensions more intelligently in the first place. Preventing or discouraging add-ons from scattering options everywhere and just being more intelligent in keeping options out of the way until they are needed.

Aug 7th 2008 10:39AM What Firefox could really use is something like Opera has in its most recent version.
There's a small tools icon before the first tab. Clicking on it makes a mini-sidebar with little icons for useful features.
The current system where addons put their toolbar icons on a toolbar or the statusbar or anywhere else they like is really cluttering the place.
Also my menus are bulging with options I never use put there by add-ons.
Basically what I'm saying is that if the browser is going to be used for more and more things, they need to think of ways of hiding or organizing options to keep them out of the way until you need them. I've watched Opera get better and better at this while my Firefox gets more and more complicated.

Because people don't care about what phones look like :)
