Mommy blogger brouhaha is the new Mary Kay (Daily Finance)

Jul 17th 2009 2:16PM I agree with Sarah, first off. There are a couple of blogs I used to read because I identified in some way with the author or I thought he/she was a compelling writer. When those blogs went the way of sponsorships and giveaways, I stopped reading. I would rather get my commercials from the television, where I can fast-forward through them. I'm one of those people who doesn't ask friends and family (or bloggers) their opinions about products. I get my information from places that have experts doing the reviewing. So if I come across a blog that's blatantly commercial, I keep going.

That doesn't mean I think others should stop reading blogs that have a commercial bent. I'm pretty sure Sarah didn't suggest that, either. When did it become so taboo to put forth one's opinions? I really despise it when people say, "If you don't like it, click the little red x!!" Blogging is a public enterprise. The exchanging of ideas and views should never be denigrated. Free speech must, absolutely must, go both ways. Writers of every kind have to expect criticism. It's part of putting yourself out there. That doesn't mean anyone has a right to be nasty, but to expect people to never disagree? Madness.

What do you do for Mother's Day? (Slashfood)

May 12th 2007 11:59AM My family leaves for the weekend, so I can bask in the silence of an empty house. I use the time to do projects, read, watch TV and surf the web. I order Indian take-out on Saturday night and on Sunday I cook for most the afternoon while my husband and kids are on their way home.

I love it.

4 year old's overdose raises questions (ParentDish)

Mar 27th 2007 10:26AM When we were starting the testing process for our son, our children's hospital wouldn't see him until he was seven. The doctor who prescribed those meds should be held responsible for that girl's death, as well as the parents. Things like this make me realize how lucky we were that Cincinnati Children's Hospital has a team of physicians, psychiatrists, and specialists that work with every child who comes through the Developmental Disabilities department. Parents should never rely on single opinions when it comes to the health and safety of their children, and especially when psychotropic drugs are involved.

Not happy to see Mommy? (ParentDish)

Mar 27th 2007 10:18AM Wow, Lisa. How incredibly observant of you. It must be nice to sit there on your pedestal and throw down proclamations about parenting. Let me tell you something that of course you wouldn't know, because you don't have kids: Nolan's reaction was completely normal. It is normal for a kid who is in daycare, and it is normal for a kid who isn't in daycare to have that reaction. It's a developmental stage that nearly every child experiences.

So, taking your opinion to its logical conclusion, parents shouldn't send their kids to school, right? Because school takes up about 7-8 hours per day, valuable time when kids are "awake and active", valuable time that parents should devote only to their children, every minute every second, right? Ridiculous.

Not good enough for American Girl (ParentDish)

Mar 26th 2007 12:51PM "American Girl dolls seem to be for rich, spoiled, brats whose parents have more money than brains and don't care if their kids grow up to be just like them. I know that American Girl dolls aren't for my kids."

So my daughter must be a rich, spoiled brat and we must have more money than brains because she has an American Girl doll. Interesting. Never mind the fact that she got it for her sixth birthday from her grandparents, and never mind that I don't let her buy clothes for the doll from the American Girl catalog because they're too expensive. It must be nice to make broad generalizations about people. I don't like Bratz dolls but I don't say bad things to people who let their girls have them.

If that incident did, in fact, take place, I think the salon was in the wrong. And the parents who made comments to the little girl were wrong, too. My daughter and I would have left had we witnessed such a thing.

Now, if the American Girl company doesn't make restitution to that little girl, we won't allow our daughter to get any more of their products. But Roger, please don't resort to name-calling again to make a point.

Ready for Girl Scout cookie season? (Slashfood)

Jan 18th 2007 9:43AM My daughter is a Brownie this year and is selling GSC for the first time. I have my own little supplier! I'm trying to hold myself back, but those Thin Mints are calling me.

Ebay auction featuring artists to support James Kim Family (ParentDish)

Jan 5th 2007 4:56PM Yeah, I think it's all too rich for my blood as well, but at least now I have plenty of art-related bookmarked sites! Most, if not all, of the artists have their own websites and sell their works independently or through other sources.

The best apples for pies (Slashfood)

Nov 10th 2006 3:37PM I have to disagree with using Granny Smith apples. They often turn mushy, especially when in a top-and-bottom-crusted pie. The best apples for pie, I've found, are Winesap, Jonathan, Gala, and Fuji.

Blogging Baby City Guides: San Francisco (ParentDish)

Nov 10th 2006 3:32PM Muir Woods isn't far, is it? I don't remember having to drive very long to get there. We were in SF without kids, but made a note to add Muir Woods to the list of things we want to do when we take the kids back someday.
