Jul 28th 2009 12:40PM MS does not pay OEMs to use Windows. In fact, it's the opposite: OEMs have to pay MS to use Windows. Other software vendors such as Symantec pay OEMs to have trial versions installed. That with the probably lower support cost of Windows makes it, overall, a lower cost option for the OEMs.
Ballots on the OS is a ridiculous idea in the first place since users would have to pay (for the initial cost and support cost) for all options, and the OS is not as readily installable as browsers.

Jul 25th 2009 7:51PM Some models of certain OEM's already allow that. The problem with the OS choice is that an OS is a whole lot more complicated than a browser, and most OEM's don't really want to support the complexity that can be Linux.
