Ask Engadget HD: Best Laptop HTPC? (Engadget HD)

Jul 9th 2010 12:33AM @Proghog

Didn't say a thing about Component. RGB input = VGA input = PC input = what I was talking about. Now I might have thrown you with saying line cable. I was referring to a 3.5mm audio line cable.

Anyways don't really want to deter this thread with bickering. My stance is using the RGB input (PC input) with an 3.5mm audio line cable gives me the best picture on my particular HDTV. And if the OP is like most of us and bought a budget TV, HDMI input might give him under/over scanning issues.

I am in the Pacific North West. Not sure where you are going with arcade monitors. My TV is a 2009 model VIZIO. Nearly every LCD TV came with an RGB input. Even has an audio line input next to the second HDMI input in case you are using an DVI to HDMI adaper. I used that set up before I got tired of the under-scanning and switched to the RGB input.

Then again RGB is what VIZIO is calling the input. It's a normal 15-pin D-Sub port (VGA port if you will).

Jul 7th 2010 3:53PM I gave up on HDMI with my laptop long time ago. I just use the RGB input with a line cable for the audio on my Visio. It doesnt have 1:1 pixel mapping so 1080p is not 1080p. But the RGB input did match the pixels.

Ask Engadget: best consumer / prosumer camcorder out now? (Engadget)

how is dropping in a MOV into Vegas tricky? At least it's a decent codec rather than AVCHD or some other proprietary codec.

So you mention that DSLR video users forget about audio, yet tell the guy to buy an external mic after you mention the Vixia... So what is the problem with using an external mic on a DSLR with a kit lens?

Anyone who is going to do video and cares about it is going to use an external mic, so there is no point in singling out DSLRs. In the end, versatility wins and last time I checked, extra prosumer video camera lenses cost well over $2k compared to a $400 2.8 zoom lens for a DSLR.
