Champions Online's Bill Roper talks retcons, powers and more part 2 (Massively)
Sep 22nd 2009 2:47PM Bill when will you let go of Diablo and embrace open world, instance-less technology?
Champions Online had amazing character customisation that would've made it a huge seller, but it's been ruined by the same thing that turned people off Conan and Hellgate London. Unless of course you are aiming for that very small niche market of around 100 people who love instances.

Sep 22nd 2009 2:37PM The MMO is crying out for a **decent** FPS-MMO right now. The problem is how do you tie the two genres together? FPS is twitch based and MMOs are fairly repetitive. TF2 has come close to it but obviously you're restricted to one map and 20 minutes of fun.
If someone could extend that to an open world that hard fast twitch/FPS style dungeons I would give my credit card details for life (providing it looked nice!)
One Shots: Set to take wing (Massively)
Sep 22nd 2009 2:32PM This might be cursing the game, but I think this could be the first proper competition for World of Warcraft.
The game has insane queues (7 hours on some) for the pre-play. It has 90% of the things you find in WoW, plus better questing - the locate/dictionary - and isn't stale. WoW is great but after playing it for 5 years even it can get stale after a week, regardless of a patch that gives you free stuff.
Did I mention the graphics are stunning?
A WoW players guide to Champions Online part 2 (Massively)
Sep 7th 2009 5:32PM This is a great game and the character customisation is really nice. I just can't get over the nagging voice asking me "How is this multiplayer?". The only time I've had a multiplayer experience is in the arenas, and one quest in the desert.
It's a shame it isn't open world as the game has some real innovations in character customisation, powers and travel. It just falls flat on its face with the social aspect the army of WoW players love so much about their game - it's a chat room with avatars and loot.
Was it Bill Roper's late involvement that turned the game into an instanced semi-linear game?
Give it a try even if instanced worlds isn't your thing.

Updates to WoW.com's Guide to Patch 3.2 (WoW)
Jul 28th 2009 6:14PM Very close - September I'm guessing?
Patch 3.2 changes the tiered Emblem system (WoW)
Jul 4th 2009 9:58AM Blizzard have got exactly the right balance with badges right now. In BC there was far too much grind to get items from them. Prior to badges it was a boring dice game on items. And bare in mind that
This new change is brilliant. It will encourage people to level their alts, it will allow people to see Ulduar, while the ones who play the game like a religion progress through the new raid content and still enjoy feeling spechial, being competitive and the rest.
Nobody has mentioned that although people can get their 8 items from the badges (eventually, after 2 months), this doesn't make the bosses less challenging or technical in Ulduar.
The change in 3.2 is here to:
* Make people stay in the game via alts
* Keep people playing by allowing them to access Ulduar
* Get them to the point where in 3.3, the same thing happens.
* Get heroics back in action
* Kill the mindless Naxxramas grind we currently have
Blizzard are finally giving people the option to access all aspects of the game, bar the very top end (which is all the current Ulduar raiders care about, right?). The game is fun to raid again, not just reserved for guilds. As someone who raided MC 6 months after it came out I feel a bit sorry for the people who still see their Guilds achievements as some kind of bragging right. You should be raiding because it's fun to do with your mates, and doing an achievement as a challenge not some bs you can lob about in trade channels like a chimp.
