Tech beta invitees get free Windows 7 Ultimate, Vista Ultimate owners still stewing (Download Squad)
Aug 5th 2009 5:55PM I am glad Microsoft is doing this. The people in the invitation only Beta were seen as professionals who got real testing done, and many of them reported back their feed-back and worked with the devs on issues and bugs that were around then. Microsoft wants to help out the people who were at the core of wider testing during the early phases. This as opposed to the early-adopter, the tech-hungry, and the "I want it free" crowd. They are rewarding those who did the early work.

I realize that a number of people feel "cheated" on the Ultimate path, but honestly I have gotten quite a bit of use out of Ultimate. The "extras" were a flop, to be honest, but the base features were there. I wanted the professional features from business, plus the home consumer features from premium. So I got Vista Ultimate. I have not regretted it at all. I suppose it comes down to the reason you went Ultimate. I went there to have acces to all the options and to tinker till content.
Windows 7 RC users will be able to install Windows 7 Upgrade discs (Download Squad)
Jul 15th 2009 3:50PM Jash, just remember that the RC starts doing reboots every two hours on March 1st of 2010.
Sean, that is why it is the "upgrade" package, and not the full retail version. You can order the full retail and never have to worry about upgrade restrictions.
ShadowGod, no, you can not use an upgrade disc to install Windows 7 on to a blank pre-formatted machine. However if you have an activated Microsoft OS (2000, XP, Vista, 7 RC all qualify) then you can have the installer do a clean install and format the drive before it does the install. Otherwise, you will need the full retail version (or an OEM version).
Really for the full skinny on what is going on, I suggest people ask over on the official Windows 7 RC Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. They will have a real answer for you, and they are pretty quick to respond.
Windows 7 RC downloads only available through August 15th (Download Squad)
Jul 6th 2009 12:27PM Yup, the Release Candidate works until June 1st of 2010, but it has two hour reboots starting on March 1st of 2010. Check the page yourself over on Microsoft's TechNet: http://tinyurl.com/832nco
So basically you have over 4 months from release to when it will incovenience you to use the Release Candidate. Honestly, try it out. It is pretty darn good. I'm using it on an old laptop and one of my development towers.
Windows 7 RTM final build on schedule for July 10th (Download Squad)
Jun 24th 2009 11:05AM Well, Tom, the good news is that Windows 7 RC will keep working just fine until March 1st of 2010. The bad news is that you will need to do a fresh install when you switch to RTM/Final come late July or October 22nd.
Wzor.net's information has been wrong before, and we all know that timetables can and do shift. I'm not holding my breath. Just last week Wzor was claiming final RTM build would be the 26th of June. Per this new time-table, 26th would fall during the Pre-RTM build recalls and assembly of the RTM. Microsoft has stated the second half of July publicly as when RTM would be done (see their press release blog) and I'm more inclined to believe that. It gives more time to find some final bugs that might be an issue. Yet it still gives plenty of time for manufacturers to get their code in shape for the official release date, and to system builders (HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc).
Am I excited? Yes. I am eagerly looking forward to the official release, and then even some new hardware built up for the new capabilities to be released. Do I believe this time table? No. It will shift again as it has in the past.
