Next generation iPhone unscrewed from Vietnam (update: video!) (Engadget)

May 12th 2010 4:54AM I wouldn't be surprised if Apple's throwing out red herrings. Then when they debut iPhone 4 at MacWorld next month, it'll be nothing like that. Can't you see The Steve building (at least) two decoy prototypes and planting them around the world just to really see the jaws drop at his keynote? Could even use old prototypes they abandoned early in the design phase.

Win a copy of Things for Mac and iPhone (TUAW.com)

Dec 25th 2009 12:58AM I keep trying various options, most recently 2Do on iPhone, but none of them suit me. The Hit List was close, but without a companion iApp, it's useless.

BTstack Keyboard jailbreak app provides iPhone text entry (TUAW.com)

Dec 25th 2009 12:54AM I keep hearing one thing: "It would be great to not have to take my laptop everywhere I go." Wait, uh... WHY did you spend the extra thousand dollars (or equivalent) for the laptop, instead of an iMac?! If you intend your laptop to sit on a desk and never move it, get a desktop system instead.

As for the keyboard, well, I DO use the iPhone as my only connection to the cyberworld when I'm out and about, choosing to leave my MBP at home (not because it sits on a desk, but because it's in a state of disarray; my iMac is what I use primarily). I could see the keyboard being quite useful at the coffee shop, not so much while waiting for my hair appointment.

Apple says jailbreaking is illegal (TUAW.com)

Feb 26th 2009 6:24AM You know this is going to go just like the whole deal on Apple's music sales. They're going to make a whole buttload of money at the App Store for the next few years, fight vigorously against jailbreaker, and then Steve (or his successor, depending on his health) will publish this "Thoughts on the iPhone" letter where he says, "Oh, we never wanted to sandbox the iPhone. It was always because of demands from AT&T that we had to defend against those who defeated our security devices. We would be happy to open it up at any time AT&T decides to do so." Ya'know... that whole apologetic crap that Steve gave us the last time about the iTunes Store DRM all over again.

(My position incidentally is this: jailbreaking is nothing more than getting Administrator/root access. When was the last time you bought a Mac and didn't get to set up an Administrator account? Of course, the administrator of a system can do whatever he wants to it: Reformat the drives, etc., but most people are smart enough not to shoot themselves in the foot.)

Apple's worst logo ever? (TUAW.com)

Jun 13th 2008 9:18PM Microsoft Bob, anyone?

Flickr Find: WebKit references Mac OS X 10.6 (TUAW.com)

Jun 3rd 2008 5:55PM I wouldn't read too much into it. When I was a kernel engineer with "another hardware/software vendor" we were working on, oh, version 10 before version 9 ever shipped out the door. It's common to start the next build cycle before the current one is even finished. You have one team that works on the current build, and when it's finished, they sustain it; another team works on the next build and spend those 18-24 months getting everything integrated before it ships.

Name Mangler: batch rename your files (TUAW.com)

May 21st 2008 9:20PM The power of not only a regex but an actual grammar for writing renaming "programs" in Name Mangler / File List make them amazingly useful. Using the regex tools and the advanced renaming where I can apply my own series, capitalization rules, etc., I can rename pretty much any group of files with a given pattern of names in just one step: More than I can say for any other tool I've ever tried -- even command-line utilities like sed. I consider Name Mangler essential software. I just wish that "go" button was in a different location. :-/

iPhone and iPod touch wallpaper roundup (TUAW.com)

Feb 25th 2008 9:25PM Don't forget http://www.vladstudio.com/ which has plenty of iPhone/iTouch-sized papers, as well as papers up to 2560x1600 for desktop use.

Parallels using MacFUSE to access NTFS (TUAW.com)

Jun 22nd 2007 9:19PM It may merely be a difference in how I'm using Parallels 3.0, but I haven't had any difficulty with it butting heads with MacFUSE 0.4 which I've installed manually.

As for the license issue, that could get hairy especially if there's an APSL violation.

TUAW Desktop of the Week (TUAW.com)

May 28th 2007 12:11AM OnyX is (at least one of) the application you are thinking of. I couldn't live without it, both for customization and for maintenance tasks such as cache cleaning.

I hadn't thought to put the iStatPro widget on the desktop but that's a great idea!
