Is the AirPort Extreme worth the price? (TUAW.com)
Apr 4th 2011 10:39AM I didn't know about some of the features that the Airport Extreme had - good to know, thanks. I've been a huge fan of D-Link wireless routers for a long time now, and I've rarely had problems with them. I've been using a DIR-655 for the last little while and haven't had any problems with disconnection or freezing up on any of my home network wireless devices (MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone).
The USB port on it is nigh on useless, though, which is frustrating, and for some odd reason, it gives my wife's laptop (an HP) disconnection issues all the time. Maybe it's time for a move to yet another piece of Apple hardware. How does the Airport Extreme stack up with Windows 7 laptops? (I realize this is kind of a silly question since they vary greatly in hardware and performance, but just putting out the question in a very general sense)

7 anti-Apple cliches that need to die (TUAW.com)
May 29th 2010 10:05PM Thanks for this article, Chris. Especially point #7 - I don't know how many times I've said this, personally.
As someone who uses Microsoft heavily at work, I have no doubts or arguments that Microsoft products are very useful and productive when they're put to good use. When I want a smooth, impressive presentation, I use my Mac; otherwise, I stick to my PowerPoint. I couldn't do my job without Excel. And iAccess is a savior in my workplace.
Be that as it may, I use Mac at home. I've bought a new Macbook or Macbook Pro every year. I shudder whenever I have to troubleshoot my friends or family on Windows. For my use, nothing trumps Mac - or Mac Applications - because there is just no equivalent on Windows or Linux. For something as simple as Twitter (Tweetie) to Adobe CS5, I am Mac when I'm at home. And despite my lapses Android-lust, I am an iPhone junkie.
Yet when it comes to cloud-based services, I turn to Google for everything. Almost all my domains are on Google Apps; I have dozens of Gmail addresses, and what isn't on Gmail is through the Google Mail interface for Google Apps. I use Google Calendar, and love my Chrome (though I use it side-by-side with Firefox). Google Docs holds duplicates of all my important files, and I'm still using Buzz.
Still, my server runs off of Ubuntu. I SSH into it every day and marvel at the efficiency and power of it as I muddle through command-line. Infinitely customizable, so much more powerful than anything that could run off of Microsoft or Apple software on the same hardware.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, there's a time and place for everything. I love Microsoft (I couldn't give up Exchange or ActiveDirectory, even though I could make the switch to OpenOffice if I was forced to), I love Google, I love Apple, I love Linux. There are reasons that each of these became popular and powerful in their own rights.
In the end, for me, this argument is like religion. Nobody is right, and nobody is wrong - even though the ones doing the arguing or evangelizing may believe without a doubt that they're the correct ones. It's one of those things where everyone is right and everyone is wrong all at once, and we can embrace that paradox if we can stand to be adults for a few minutes.
I know, I know, this is the internet.

Satellite watching with GoSatWatch for iPhone (TUAW.com)
Apr 23rd 2009 5:53PM Hmm... I might look into this, then. If I can track for INMARSAT and BGAN, that makes my job a hell of a lot easier.

Apr 23rd 2009 3:44PM An app like this would be very useful for people who deal with deployed military satellite communications - being able to hit the birds in the sky through GPS positional locating for INMARSAT, Iridium, and other stuff like that.
