Besturn B30 looks remarkably current for a 30-year-old VW Jetta (Autoblog)

Apr 17th 2011 7:39PM A few reasons.

#1: The Volvo 240 and the W123's nigh-unkillability came from excellent, but expensive engineering.
#2: The Hilux isn't a CAR, and has higher running costs.
#3: The Mk2 Jetta with an 8-valve gasoline engine is surprisingly unkillable, because of simplicity.
#4: FAW, who makes Besturns, already has tooling for Mk2 Jettas (and makes them, largely for taxi use). And, in fact, the FAW-VW Jetta isn't even a copy - VW sold production rights to FAW, they're sold in VW dealerships, and FAW bought the tooling that was used in the Westmoreland County, PA plant, when VW shut that down in 1989. (On the flip side, in the case of the Chery A11 and A15, while Chery did get a hold of the actual tooling used to make SEAT Toledos, my understanding is that VW didn't sell them the rights to actually do anything with it, and the poor quality shows - just look for videos of a Chery Amulet crash test.)

Report: Automaker group voices concerns over federal ethanol legislation (Autoblog)

Apr 8th 2011 10:44AM Except corn ethanol only yields 25% more energy than is invested in its production, and corn is an awful fuel crop and a mediocre food crop.

Ford shows off 67-mpg Focus Econetic ahead of Amsterdam debut (Autoblog)

Apr 7th 2011 4:51AM Paul: They have to do that to improve aerodynamics. Drag is the enemy.

Subaru shows us a side of the 2012 Impreza (Autoblog)

Apr 6th 2011 9:21AM Probably for crash safety or something?

Video: Why you should never follow other cars too closely (Autoblog)

Apr 4th 2011 2:13PM Actually, where I am, the law is "through traffic keep left", sadly. :(

Johnson Controls shows super-slim stowable pickup seats (Autoblog)

Apr 2nd 2011 11:24AM Huh.

I'm actually planning out a tandem-seat vehicle that needs a compact folding rear seat... this could work out nicely. Now to find out what pickups will have it by the time I'm ready to actually start building the vehicle, get a seat out of one, and build the rear of the passenger compartment around it...

Video: Audi R18 racer testing at Sebring in high-def (Autoblog)

Mar 31st 2011 2:51PM Shutting down during pit stops (might just be refueling) and then restarting is manually done, and is mandatory.

However, there's been rumors that Audi might do a KERS system. Interesting that the camera angle was careful to not show the front wheels very well when it was launching (to see if there was any wheelspin.) And, on the KERS systems, the cars are required to be able to go the length of pit lane on purely electric power, either from battery or flywheel storage. So, that could change how cars leave the pit - get out from pit lane on KERS, while starting the engine. However, that strategy could screw you over if the engine doesn't start...

Report: EU working to ban gas and diesel-powered cars by 2050 (Autoblog)

Mar 28th 2011 11:34AM You could probably run an Audi R10 on homebrew biodiesel... but it wouldn't run right at all.

Pics Aplenty: Audi R18 "Evolution 2" cars finish tests in U.S. (Autoblog)

Mar 26th 2011 7:10AM Except Audi used it as a developmental race for the R10, and Peugeot was using it as a developmental race for the 908. (Which is why Peugeot had a privateer team run the old 908. (As it was sponsored by an insurance company, Matmut, they called it their insurance policy. It certainly paid off for them.))
