Activists target SWTOR's future same-gender romances (Massively)

Jan 31st 2012 4:36PM The inability of many parents to feel comfortable enough to discuss homosexuality with kids (or even heterosexuality) is a real problem. It creates a culture of ignorance, fear, and frankly intolerance. Having "the talk" with your kids should not be a few words telling them not to have sex and if they do use a condom. That's about all I got as a teen.

Video games have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment. All across the spectrum we have teen friendly shows that depict positive gay characters and situations including romance, humor and drama. Why not video games. As many of the other posters have said, it's a Teen+ game. Teens are aware of the existence of gays and lesbians and everything in between. Having a parent discuss this with them will only encourage a lack of homophobia and fear.

The Daily Grind: Are open betas necessary? (Massively)

Sep 5th 2010 8:35AM I don't disagree that beta's are important at least closed ones, but most single player games usually don't let you have a free trial for months after release, other than xbox arcade type games. I didn't get into the Starcraft II beta, so I have to go by the overwhelmingly positive post launch reviews. Same would be true for single player games with bad reviews. I can always choose to wait to purchase till a demo comes out. Why do MMO's have to offer this Open Beta and single player games don't?

The Daily Grind: Are open betas necessary? (Massively)

Sep 5th 2010 8:28AM I am afraid that open betas are bad for most games. Many games will suffer from the backlash of people that play. There will always be people that don't like features, feel it isn't ready, but open betas allow the loudest, most destructive element to voice what might be a huge bias against the game. Betas should be closed and should include those community members who have been actively a part of the games community, and comments should not be allowed to destroy a game before it ever goes live. controversial game-play decisions should be treated as controversial by the developer and with an air of openness to the beta testers, letting them know that these features are undergoing testing and will not necessarily be part of the final game. With MMO's people should be reminded that there will likely be several updates in the first few months it is live and that all MMO's are a work in progress.

Granted some games have been launched that were NOT ready. One possible solution if a game knows it will need updates but is being pressured to launch, the free period should be extended beyond 30 days for subscription games until such time that they feel it is truly ready. There is no easy answer.

The honest truth is that many MMO's are very ambitious huge projects. Developers should engineer a game that will earn back the money it costs over a period of time and not hype it so much that it needs to have a gigantic launch. Often this is called a "soft launch".

Kongregate brings its Flash games to Android platform (Download Squad)

May 22nd 2010 3:27PM As it is often stated, Flash doesn't innately support touch, it supports mouse clicks and mouse roll-overs. There would likely need to be some code adjustments to make things run smoothly. Trackball will help. Plus, I imagine they want to be sure that the game looks good in a smaller screen. It sounds like a lot has been done with flash 10.1 that will make it easier to run on mobile touch hardware.

The Daily Grind: Where do you go after the end of the world? (Massively)

Feb 15th 2010 8:08AM I'm always switching around for fear of just this happening. I know I can be entertained elsewhere. I get the most pleasure from the beginning levels in most games. End game is important, but most MMO's have done a good job of making the first 10-20 levels a highpoint of the game. Aion, AoC, Champions Online, WAR, and others all kick butt in the beginning levels as an example, IMO.

I do have one old stand by that I love to regularly return to. EQ2.

Free Realms shows off the fun with their launch video (Massively)

Apr 28th 2009 6:52PM Ummm, yea. I was training a pet during beta, and I was like wow. I am so glad no one I know can see me doing this. I think Free Realms is going to be a lot of people's "Dirty little secret". :)

Free Realms shows off the fun with their launch video (Massively)

Apr 28th 2009 6:50PM They have hardly mentioned the launch over there. I think they are being very cautious due to the massively hateful SOE haters that hang out there.
