Exclusive: Upcoming Apple TV loses 1080p playback, gains apps... and will be renamed iTV (Engadget)
Aug 12th 2010 5:49AM @a dumb cat Exactly that why this sound so fishy, you can stick a Broadcom Crystal HD chip inside the current AppleTV and play some Blu-rays through XBMC on it.
There's no reason other than politics that Apple cant stick a more powerful H.264 decoder chip inside the iTV.
The only explanation I can think off is that the dedicated logic for decoding H.264 is embedded in the A4 CPU and has no external bus with the bandwidth to handle HD video. Hence the limitation to 720p like that iPad.

The ITC is the favorite court for anyone who wants to sue over patents due to its favorable attitude towards them. It used to be that court in Texas but since they tightened up the rules for patent trolling they've all gone running to the ITC now.

London to become one giant WiFi hotspot by 2012, because Boris says so (Engadget)

Except as often the case with southpark people completely miss the point and latch onto whatever racist, offensive meme further purporting it.
The whole anti-ginger thing was a very British phenomenon that has spread because of bad comedians highlighting the issue thinking they are defusing it and only making it worse.
Also not sure what prompted your original comment but Boris has blond hair if thats what it was (that photo is making his hair look odd).
Microsoft weighs in: 'the future of the web is HTML5' (Engadget)
Apr 30th 2010 4:21AM Hardware acceleration is two different things, Windows has had GPU video acceleration through DXVA far, far longer than OSX has had all the way back to WinXP.
The GPU acceleration in IE9 is for drawing all on screen content within the browser and is available to Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

Kogan's latest fantasy product? An IPTV with Chrome browser, WiFi & gaming (Engadget)
Apr 10th 2010 12:37PM @Kamalot The TV companies are lazy, short sited & cheap. They'd rather continue on with bad GUI's, poor features & performance then spend the money on building something thats like in this video.
They assume all consumers dont care about such things & are easily duped by advertising some slow ass Youtube widget but also that the AV nerds only care about image quality (which is partly true). You could have the worst GUI on the market and many HDTV review sites would never even take that into consideration.
I too hope someday that someone will set a cat among the pigeons.
