Oct 14th 2006 9:03PM Sounds like one of my biggest gripes with open source has spilled into the way the OSS community handles their real world planning: too much stratification, not enough uniting of forces.

There should be far fewer parties, netting much better attendance and more fun to be had by all.

Leo Laporte wants to rebrand podcasts as 'netcasts' - I agree (TUAW.com)

Oct 7th 2006 11:41AM #7: "The term "NetCast" says nothing about it relating to mobile audio devices"

That's exactly part of the point. They want a more generic, neutral term for these things beCAUSE they shouldn't be tied to one device or a specific usage. Do you *have* to listen to a podcast on a mobile device? Or can you listen to it on your computer? Or can you burn it to a CD and throw it in your car?

The term *pod*cast narrows the perceptions of 'the other half' into thinking they're just for iPods and iTunes, and a more generic name would level that playing field and help new listeners to understand them better.

Oct 3rd 2006 9:41PM Welcome Alex! It's great to have you aboard. Your writing rocks the venerable hizzy.

Now about that TUAW hazing I mentioned...

Intel build of ecto 2.4.1 now available (TUAW.com)

Oct 3rd 2006 10:17AM Just in case: I *think* your upload directory needs to be called "uploads," (you know how picky this web stuff can get), and I believe it needs to be in the root of your /wp-content/ folder, where your theme and plugin dirs live.

Oct 3rd 2006 8:50AM I've found that it's usually a permissions-related issue, not Ecto's fault. Depending on how you set up your WP directory, and whether you used something like a one-click install tool from your host, you might need to create the uploads directory and/or set its permissions so ecto can place files into it.

I learned about this on http://codex.wordpress.org, it's basically their support/wiki for all things WP. These days I usually use the one-click install tool that DreamHost provides, as it seems to set up the directory *perfectly,* permissions and all.

Oct 3rd 2006 8:21AM Ecto has always worked with WordPress, I've been using it for years to blog to my WordPress 1.5 and now 2.0 sites. If by Pages you mean Google Pages, I think you might be out of luck, as I'm pretty sure they don't offer a blogging API for it, as it really isn't a blogging system anyway. Google Pages is more of a basic WYSIWYG online webpage maker, rather than a blogging/news platform.

Apple emailing .Mac customers about new webmail (TUAW.com)

Oct 1st 2006 12:25PM #1: Not really. Almost all apps being updated are going Universal Binary, meaning they work perfectly fine on both Intel and PowerPC machines. Leopard also supports this incredibly well, and with how easy it is for most developers to build Universal apps, it doesn't sound like this duality needs to get shoved out the door any time soon.

Newly resized iTS video content just a bad upsample? (TUAW.com)

Sep 30th 2006 3:41PM For what it's worth guys, I apologize for the annoying ads. Thanks for letting us know, as we report these to the powers that be who can work their magic and take care of the issue. Please know that we don't pick and chose every ad that displays; we work with ad networks who funnel the ad content to our pages, so we honestly aren't *trying* to apply annoying stuff like that.

Sep 30th 2006 12:31PM #16 and #18: Yea, I'm working my way into the video biz and while obviously not everyone uses Macs or a 100% Mac workflow, many in the pro industry roll on the Apple side of the fence. They usually love their tools and like to give Apple props in their production work.
