Report: iPhone 4 owners report fewer dropped calls than iPhone 3GS (TUAW.com)
Aug 5th 2010 4:30PM These numbers look suspiciously low. My dropped call percentage has to be well over 50% on my iPhone 3G and 4. I think I'm being conservative with my estimate, too.
Avid launches consumer versions of Pro Tools audio editing suite (Download Squad)
Sep 10th 2009 12:54PM The Mbox 2 Micro only offers an analog audio output. I think the point of the device is to allow ProTools users to work on their mixes while they're on the road.

AT&T's voice and data service are terrible in Chicago. I used to have Verizon and their network is solid. I rarely--if ever--had issues with Verizon's service. I was willing to pay more for the better service. I only switched to AT&T for the iPhone. I'd say at least half my calls get dropped at some point with AT&T.
I also have a Sprint USB EVDO device that I use with my laptop. I haven't done any serious testing, but it appears that Sprint's EVDO network is superior to AT&T's 3G network, as well. Anyway, long story short, I wish Apple and Verizon would have sealed the deal instead of Apple and AT&T. I'm actually paying more for voice/data service now with AT&T than I was with Verizon.

Dec 10th 2008 7:44PM I think they meant to say _below_ average performance as a cell phone.
I really wish Apple could have worked something out with Verizon, instead of AT&T. Those AT&T commercials are just starting to make me bitter. I don't know how they can advertise their network to be so great when it sucks so badly. "More bars in more places" is a load of crap--at least it is in Chicago.

Dec 9th 2008 5:58PM Travis said, "Uh, you did actually WATCH the TG episode you're referring to, right? Neither car were driven "conservatively", they were flogged repeatedly at the race track. The M3 came out with 19mpg, and the Prius 17. Funny sketch, but in no way indicative of real world driving..."
IIRC, for the comparison in question, the Prius was driven as fast as possible around the track while Clarkson just kept up with it in the M3. The point being that driving style is a major factor in fuel economy.

A big bag of Blu-Ray hurt for Apple (TUAW.com)
Oct 15th 2008 10:06PM Well, you better hope Blu-Ray does better than UMD. And if RED is indeed working on physical HD media it'll most likely eat Blu-Ray alive.
Michael Moore to pull a Joss Whedon, distribute next film online for free (Download Squad)
Sep 6th 2008 2:34AM The messenger _is_ the problem because the messenger is disingenuous. His movies are incredibly manipulative. I watched "Bowling for Columbine" expecting a documentary. What I got instead made me very angry. It made me angry because Moore was insulting his audience's intelligence. If you have a point you want to prove, prove it to me, but don't try to trick me into believing it. It was basically thinly veiled propaganda.
BlackBerry Bold hitting AT&T on October 2? (Engadget)
Sep 1st 2008 1:47AM I freakin' hate AT&T. I just switched from Verizon to get an iPhone. The difference is not subtle. I rarely had coverage or performance issues with Verizon. I have issues with AT&T's sh*tty network multiple times a day. Apparently, walls are a major obstacle for AT&T cellular signals. AT&T must not realize that most of us live and work _indoors_!
Guys in three piece suits don't stand in lines at AT&T stores to get their Blackberries. They have IT departments that take care of those things for them.
Techie Swedes prove iPhone 3G reception is "normal" (TUAW.com)
Aug 25th 2008 1:25PM I switched from Verizon to AT&T so I could get an iPhone 3G. AT&T is a joke compared to Verizon--at least in Chicago. It was _rare_ that I would not get a good Verizon signal with EVDO. The call quality was great. Dropped calls were extremely rare. Now, it's rare that I get a decent signal (EDGE or 3G) with AT&T, no matter where I am. I can't even make a phone call from inside my friend house (in a densely populated, urban area).
Here's a short list of places where I get no signal with AT&T but where I used to get a good signal with Verizon: Elevators at home and at work, parking garage at home, anywhere in my friend's house, Lake Shore Drive around Illinois Street...
I find it a little disturbing that my phone doesn't work at all inside elevators after reading this New Yorker article about a guy that was trapped in an elevator for 41 hours: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/04/21/080421fa_fact_paumgarten
