Apple changes purchase policy so your kids don't max out your credit card (TUAW.com)
Mar 10th 2011 4:34PM Gillian: Did you read the rest of the article?
"Once you've made one in-app purchase and entered your password, you can make other recurring charges within 15 minutes without reentering the password."
There should simply be an option that any time any purchase is made on the device it requires a password. It's kind of a no-brainer and I don't know why Apple hasn't gone ahead and added it. Even ignoring the in-app purchase problem, I'm sure once or twice someone has accidentally purchased a $10+ app from a poor choice of fumbling around the touch screen while browsing the app store after buying a free app. I can think of one or two older family members with iPhones that could be privy to such a blunder. Why wouldn't you at least want the option, this is bank account we're talking about..
Dear Aunt TUAW: Do I need to upgrade to Aperture? (TUAW.com)
Mar 10th 2011 2:10PM I find that most of these problems go away if you choose to not let iPhoto manage your files for you (I choose this method for iTunes as well - it keeps my digital purchases separate from my ripped music, which is better for knowing what needs to be backed up)). Just make a "My Pictures" Folder in the Pictures file, then use Image Capture to upload pics from your SD Card to a new folder within, named after the event. Then when you go to iPhoto and you import that folder, it names the event after the folder name and leaves the pics where you had them! This way, you can back up only certain folders in this scheme, etc. This is a great way to manage your originals as well, because all of your edits go into the iPhoto library package, leaving your originals alone in your custom Finder structure. This also allows you to have both an Aperture and iPhoto library that reference the same files on your drive, without needlessly duplicating them.
My workflow involves both Aperture (for sorting and making adjustments) and iPhoto (for viewing and sharing), but another Aperture pro is that the Aperture library file only stores the "edited data" for your pics, whereas iPhoto actually makes a separate copy of the entire photo when you edit it (this becomes a headache with some cameras, because iPhoto will interpret a tag to rotate the file as an edit and store a duplicate of a file you haven't even changed!).
MobileMe boxed copies going away (TUAW.com)
Feb 24th 2011 2:49PM I'm sure that if it indeed does become a free service, there will either be a paid component, such as extra storage space, an itunes subscription service, or automatic cloud backups, which paying customers will be transitioned to, or they will be offered a prorated iTunes or Apple Store gift card for the amount left in their subscription. While not a full cash refund, I'm sure most customers will take it as if you pay for mobilme, it's a safe bet your invested in Apple's consumer universe.
Apple and AT&T servers up and down and up and down (TUAW.com)
Jun 15th 2010 1:26PM Actually, I disagree there, not just because of my personal situation. It seems to me that it makes even more sense for AT&T to want to work this on their non-iPhone customers than on the current ones. They've been getting a bad rap in the last few weeks particularly and Android phones are on the rise on other carriers. What a great line for their customers on other phones whose contracts are nearing completion to say "well sure you could wait 6 months and go to Verizon to get a Droid, but if you stick with us for two more years we'll let you upgrade to the brand new iPhone 4 early!" Anyway, I understand what you're saying, but at the same time the vernacular was a little unclear right out the gate, and unfortunately it seems as if my wife is like the only person salivating over this thing that didn't already have an iPhone.
Apple and AT&T servers up and down and up and down (TUAW.com)
Jun 15th 2010 12:20PM Looking like I might be SOL. After chatting with an AT&T rep on their website last week, I felt pretty positive since they said their computer showed me as being eligible for the early $199 upgrade. However my account site never updated to say as such, so I spoke with someone over the phone last night and they gave me the run around and a blanket "well this is the agreement Apple made with us" (No, as far as I could tell, AT&T OFFERED this to Apple). I got my iPhone 3GS in January, so my upgrade isn't until spring 2011, but my wife's BB Curve is up for upgrade in September. I feel as though nothing stated in the keynote indicated this was only for current iPhone owners to only replace their current phones. So, I'll be going to an AT&T store this afternoon to see if I can reason with them, it seems silly that if I had put the iPhone on my wife's number and switched to her curve then we would be eligible for the upgrade right now. This is semantics, they're making me fight to GIVE THEM my money.
'Lost' Series Finale Theories: Searching for Explanations and Answers (AOL TV)
May 25th 2010 12:20PM They made it off the island. Kate lived for a while after she got off as indicated in her line to Jack in the sideways: "I missed you so much!" That says to me that she lived the rest of her days, yet often pined for Jack, wishing she could have him back. The wreckage over the credits has the Oceanic logo and is next to parts of their degraded camp as it looked in Season 5 when we first saw what it looked like in 2007. I think that this shows that the site has become peaceful like a cemetery, and I doubt Hurley returned often while serving as protector of the island.
'Lost' Series Finale Theories: Searching for Explanations and Answers (AOL TV)
May 25th 2010 12:01PM Two points of contention from the article. First of all, we can infer that Desmond got off of the island, because Hurley and Ben discuss that as their first order of business as #1 and #2. When Hurley laments that no one can get to or leave the island, Ben replies that that was merely Jacob's way of doing things. Hurley is now protector, so he can make the rules. I doubt that it was very long before they ensured that Desmond was back with Penny and young Charlie. While this somewhat downplays the urgency of getting the Ajira plane off the ground, that flight going over Jack's dying moments served as a payoff for him, that he knew it was ok to let go, his friends were safe.
Second, I keep reading all of this hoopla where people are still believing that Jughead created the flash sideways. My biggest problem with this season was that it seemed that they had somehow come to peace with or found a device that let them shoot down the show's no paradox rules. I had no idea how they were going to justify the flash-sideways world while maintaining that you can't change the future. However, Christian's revelation that this was a world created by their souls in the afterlife completely explains it away and cements that whatever happened, did indeed always happen. The Incident that we witnessed, with our castaways and the bomb is how that day ALWAYS happened. While it is not clear if the bomb did actually detonate (initiating their time-jump, or perhaps the time-jump happened just at this perfect time) I think that it did, but the blast was limited by the electromagnetic event already occurring inside the swan site. And this means that like what Miles said, it's possible that Jack's actions led to the button in the hatch all along (or it possibly saved the island from sinking on THAT day). I have a feeling that when they clear up some of the questions on the DVD, this will be the catalyst that affects child birth on the island, as obviously with Daniel and Ethan, during the early Dharma days, carrying a child to term was no problem on the island.

May 25th 2010 11:28AM Jack didn't climb out of the cave. He was transported to that rock just outside of the mouth, this is the same rock that Jacob found MIB's body crumpled on after he watched the Smoke monster escape the light. This is a similar phenom to how after experiencing a similar electromagnetic event, Desmond reappeared in some random position in the jungle after blowing up the hatch.
Farewell to Facebook, at least for now (Download Squad)
May 13th 2010 2:01PM Jason, can I ask exactly how your friends' identity was stolen and to what extent? This is merely curiosity, as I have no idea how this would be possible with the particular information that I, at least, share with Facebook. I am probably more in line with your thinking, but honestly, like Google experienced with the Buzz fiasco, a few simple and honest tweaks to your ability to personalize privacy settings could go a long way to assuring my comfort with FB. However, the second that FB ceased to be an extension of chat for college students and became a place that parents and business associates far and wide began to join, I quickly became very deliberate with what information I shared and added to the site, so I at least feel that I've made my peace with what FB is to me in its ever evolving form. However if there is a deeper way that FB is being exploited to dig into personal information I may not even be aware that it has access to, I'd like to know.
Will 'Star Wars' Work as a TV Comedy? (Cinematical)
Apr 6th 2010 1:54PM I think it all depends on the type of animation and where this is posited. If it is stylized a little and goes for Adult Swim or Comedy Central type material, it could be great. I think the key is that it is set in the Star Wars universe with new characters and isn't like The Odd Couple with Obiwan and Anakin.
Also, I think that Lucas really screwed the pooch with the Clone Wars movie by choosing the episodes they did. Because I keep hearing how awful it was and thus avoided it. I still haven't seen the film, but have since seen about 60% of the first season and all of the second season thus far, and it's actually quite stellar. I think it's the best Star Wars product since Empire and really takes all of the decent qualities present in the prequels and reaches their potential. I would say that had this been the route chosen to tell the entire prequel storyline rather than 3 films, it would be quite revered in the fan community!
