Use Wallsaver to embed a screensaver on your Mac's desktop (Download Squad)

Jul 28th 2010 9:48AM Agreed. When everyone was going nutty over Android's addition of animated backgrounds, I was all "Pourqoi?". It was even specifically mentioned in the Evo Vs iPhone video. Why is this an important feature?

As for my own desktop, same as you: Default background black, plus I hide all of my desktop icons (no need for them thanks to Launchy). As I work in XP most of the time, my default theme-ing is plain and gray instead of the garish blue and green that decks the screens of my co-workers.

But maybe I'm just boring.

Greenville, South Carolina Lights Up the Sky for Google Fiber (Urlesque)

Mar 26th 2010 2:07PM Actually, the 100x is correct if the average american internet connection is 10 megabits per second. My mistake.

Greenville, South Carolina Lights Up the Sky for Google Fiber (Urlesque)

Mar 26th 2010 2:05PM "bandwidth speeds up to 1 giga***byte*** per second"

GigaBIT, not gigaBYTE. Big difference.

"That's 100x faster than a typical American internet connection"

If the average American internet connection is 100 megabits per second, this would be correct. I don't think this is the case though.

Xbox 360 getting USB storage support in Spring 2010 firmware update (Engadget)

Mar 18th 2010 1:37PM Problem: USB2 bottleneck.

USB2 transfer rates are much slower than the MS SATA hard drives. If they allow disc->USB external storage, I don't know if it will offer any speed benefit versus loading the game from disc.

A more better-er solution would be add an eSATA connection to the rumored slim 360. Or a user-servicable SATA shell that will accept whatever SATA drive that you toss into it.

Apple Tablet rumor roundup: summer 2010 edition (Engadget)

Jan 20th 2010 11:16AM Could this not be one of the plastic bezels from one of the oversized iPhones that they put in the front window displays at the Apple store? Something like this, but smaller?:

It seems odd that Apple would put an oversized on/home button plus a huge microphone slot in a tablet. Even on the biggest of the MacBook Pros, the on button is still the same size as all the other models.

Facebook hits 350 million users, deletes regional networks (Download Squad)

Dec 2nd 2009 12:14PM Read this last night and am glad to hear this change.

I was nailed with identity theft to the tune of $40K worth of charges on frauduently aquired credit cards. I'm near certain that some of the information used for the heist (birthdate, in particular) was pulled from my Facebook profile because I was the member of a regional network that had thousands of subscribers. With default security settings, anyone from that network could retrieve a good deal of personal information from my profile.

Lesson learned, and I quickly zoinked myself out of any networks and maxed out privacy settings where it was possible.
