Palm Pre in-depth impressions, video, and huge hands-on gallery (Engadget)

Jan 9th 2009 8:20AM iPhone killer?? It would take more than that entire $100 million investment spent on a massive advertising campaign to even put a dent in iPhone sales. I'd rather see them divert a little bit of it to adding a microSD slot first :-)

Seriously: this is a good, maybe even a really, really good phone. But it's not revolutionary. Revolutionary would have been a video-out port and support for bluetooth keyboard/mouse combos that would have allowed me to replace my laptop with this. Oh, yeah, that'll take a bit more than 8 GBytes of RAM, too :-) (BTW, I note that the TI CPU supports 1024x768 video, so maybe on the next version...)

No, Palm has a POTENTIAL hit on it's hands here (and it really needs one). But to make it count, they've got to get it out to the market soon. Really, really soon. And while I understand the need to cut a deal with Sprint to move the first million or so units, they also need to get a GSM version out the door ASAP, get it available through as many carriers as possible, AND offer an unlocked version oof both the CDMA and GSM versions. IMHO, the Sprint version needs to be shipping in 60 - 90 days to capitalize on the buzz, and the unlocked and GSM versions need to follow 60- 90 days after that. And yes, they're going to need to spend some of that $100 million on a hard-hitting ad campaign (and yes, they can look to Apple for inspiration on that).

And then, hopefully, Palm will capitalize on the window of opportunity by offering the same basic phone in a couple of different form factors for other market needs. Go ahead and offer a keyboard-less version, and also offer a side-slider and a side-hinged clamshell design - all with the same basic guts (which will both dramatically reduce engineering and support costs, as well as simplify development issues for 3rd-party suppliers). I think if they do that, they have the opportunity to capture a significant market share.

I wish them all the best in that!!

Yahoo! Mail adds @ymail and @rocketmail (Download Squad)

Jul 14th 2008 12:47PM Does anyone have any idea why they choose to promote the new mail domains with images associated with an accused pedophile? Is that the kind of client they want to attract? Kind of gives a whole new - and very sick - meaning to "user"
