Up to 20% of Android apps could be spyware (Download Squad)

Jun 24th 2010 6:57AM To borrow some of someone else's words, "The problem is simple apps ... will sometimes want ... access when they really shouldn't need it. There needs to be a way to deny certain rights to apps, instead of the approve app's request or don't install as it currently works."

Should you be paid for the time it takes to boot your computer? (Download Squad)

Dec 1st 2008 1:21AM The people in this case should be able to refer to Tyson Foods, Inc. v. De Asencio [http://www.scotusblog.com/wp/new-cert-petition-tyson-foods-v-de-asencio/ and http://wageandhour.yezbaklaw.com/De%20Asencio%20Decision.pdf], in which Tyson did not want to pay people for, "for time that they spent putting on, taking off, and washing certain sanitary and protective clothing before and after their shifts and at breaks."

Tyson does not allow this protective gear to be put on outside and they don't consider you to be "working" if you are inside and don't have it on, so you have to get there early, put the gear on, work and ten to take a break, you have to lose some time getting the gear off, go out take the short break and get back in to get the gear on. Same thing at the end of the day.

It's hard to believe people actually work there.

"...The Third Circuit held that the jury should not have been asked to decide whether or not the activity involved exertion. It held that work was instead any “form of activity controlled or required by the employer and pursued for the benefit of the employer,” regardless of whether it involved exertion. The court based this interpretation of the statute on the Court’s decision in Armour & Co. v. Wantock, 323 U.S. 126 (1944). Armour held that exertion was not a necessary element of work in every instance, because an employer may hire an employee simply to wait for something to happen, without asking the employee to undertake any exertion on the employer’s behalf.
..."

So, if you have a moment, and are locked out of the BIOS, have the company IT set your machine to boot up prior to your arrival and just turn off your monitor each night. If your employer gives you any crap, while you're "not working", give them the links to this case, but keep an eye on it, Tyson is appealing, again.
