iTunes versions older than 10.0 now incompatible with iTunes Store (TUAW.com)

Apr 26th 2011 5:31AM I commend any developers who are still supporting older OS versions, but it can be difficult. One of the developers of Perian summed up some of the challenges here: http://preview.tinyurl.com/3lw9orm

(tl;dr version): supporting 10.5 and PPC added nearly 6 months to their development cycle.

Verizon rumored to sell a 16 GB Motorola Xoom 4G LTE (TUAW.com)

Apr 10th 2011 10:38AM Here’s the problem in a nut:

When the iPad 1 outsold every Android tablet made combined by a factor of 10 or 20 or 50 or whatever, we were told “wait until Honeycomb and these faster sexier tablets with Flash and SD slots and all these ports. These consumers will come to their senses and come to the obvious conclusion that they need all this... stuff.”

Now that the iPad 2 is outselling every Android tablet made by a factor of 20 or 50 or 100 or whatever, after they’ve taken their best shot, with their dual-core Tegra whatevers with Flash and SD slots an 16:9 and Honeycomb and... consumers don’t care. They’ve intuitively figured out what Apple makes explicit in that “Technology is not enough” ad.

Security firm warns lack of iOS 4.3 update leaves iPhone 3G vulnerable (TUAW.com)

Mar 12th 2011 10:21AM Keep in mind that one of the chief complaints from many Android users is how bad the various carriers and manufacturers are about making OS updates available to even relatively new phones.

iOS 4.3 rumored to have PhotoStream service, iPad FaceTime, PhotoBooth apps (TUAW.com)

Jan 20th 2011 10:58AM SIP -- just buy Nightstand; it’s 2 lousy bucks.

I’m looking forward to the camera tricks on iPad 2.

Hands on with the Jawbone ICON (TUAW.com)

Jul 2nd 2010 7:13PM Maybe I'm missing something here, but I just don't see the point of a2dp on a mono device. I got the cheapest possible (~$50) stereo bluetooth headset at Best Buy, and while, sound quality wise, even the $25 wired Sony "studito style" phones trounce it, it is at least possible to listen to music in stereo, and answer calls. As a music lover, I can't see spending twice as much on a mono BT headset.

iPhone 101: What you need to know about FaceTime (TUAW.com)

Jun 26th 2010 8:49AM Well, if you're on AT&T, at least, then it would be considered a mobile-to-mobile call (the other person is an AT&T wireless customer, too) so it comes out of your unlimited minutes pool, so it wouldn't matter one way or the other. I don't know how it would work with other carriers.

Did iPad kill the Courier tablet? (TUAW.com)

May 1st 2010 11:39AM I'll be bonecrushingly obvious here and quote Steve Jobs:

"Real artists ship."

One of the big changes at Apple when Steve Jobs came back is that a lot of airy-fairy projects that had no real chance of producing real products were cut. Apple simply didn't have the resources to devote to things like the old Knowledge Navigator-type "nice dream" things that weren't leading towards eventual products and revenue.

Microsoft still uses the classic approach of throwing up vapor to "freeze the market" in place until they can get a competitive product out of the door. The problem is that no one believes that they're capable of actual innovation anymore, so it just doesn't work. This is why Apple and Google have been eating their lunch, producing new stuff that people actually want to buy and use.

NY Times details Google/Apple relationship souring (TUAW.com)

Mar 16th 2010 10:31AM Connie said: "Hmmm. I don't know this Tim Bray person, but he sounds like an idiot.”

Though I don’t agree with him in this context, Tim Bray (hint: search for him on Wikipedia) is most certainly not an idiot. Among other things, he was one of the principal developers involved in the standardization of XML and the Atom syndication format.
