Florida Man Crashes Into Restaurant, Orders Breakfast (Slashfood)
Jan 7th 2010 11:34PM To those that are against the elderly driving or support re-testing: Without weighing in on my opinion on that, please make sure that when you reach that age you remember your comments today and do the right thing: surrender your license, or stop driving, or have someone you trust re-test you!
Know Your Rights: Does the Kindle 2's text-to-speech infringe authors' copyrights? (Engadget)
Feb 14th 2009 7:29AM First off, this is one of the worst articles/interviews I have read in a while. It barely passes for a conversation, even. What it accomplishes is only an introduction to a potential issue....
That said, and having read 1 of 4 pages of comments: I wonder if anyone's thought of the implications of text-to-speech being considered a recording. This needs to be considered a data processing application and nothing more. To consider it a recording in any way at all (outside of the obvious fact that it's not a recording but rather processed data) could legally and financially render the text-to-speech market dead. If I were to have my computer "read" this page to me, then I would owe Engadget money for that reading, yes? And I could extrapolate on this.... But I'll stop, for it is a large issue, and possibly of merit to finalize that text-to-speech is data processing and not a recording. Sure it'll eventually compete with audio recordings... in the same way that book publishing competed with the hand-written book... and that all books competed with live performance, priorly the only means to tell a story...
eBay Buyer Leaves Neutral Feedback, Gets Sued for $10,000 by Seller (Switched)
Feb 3rd 2009 12:04PM On ebay feedback:
Retaliation -- BIG problem. No one--neither buyer nor seller--can be honest with that system in place. My thought was always so simple: mutual feedback or nothing. Meaning, eliminate all the variables of who-leaves-feedback-first, what did they say, etc.... Simply replace that with 1) seller leaves feedback at any time, 2) buyer leaves feedback at any time, 3) when and only when BOTH have left feedback do the feedback results post! Simple! So, whether simple feedback (pos/neu/neg + comments) or complex (stars ratings on shipping, product, etc).... nothing's shown live till both parties leave feedback (or hopefullly an option to "decline feedback for this transaction")....
Google gets overprotective, flags whole internet as malware (Download Squad)
Jan 31st 2009 7:01PM I saw that happening earlier! I thought it was the oddest thing, too! What I didn't realize was that it was coming from Google... I was trying some new Firefox extensions at the time (especially Interclue - awesome btw :-) and really thought it was just the extension causing the error!
Good job w/ the screenshot!! That even crossed my mind, but again, I didn't think it was Google itself... so who would've cared??
eBay (EBAY) sellers already planning next boycott (BloggingStocks)
Mar 23rd 2008 1:54PM IMHO, it's a great idea for ebay to end sellers' feedback, and yes, mostly because of retaliatory feedback. As a buyer-only, I've seen this, and have even been "afraid" to leave negative feedback when something does go wrong, so I'll end up sugar-coating feedback in those cases. From the seller's end, either the buyer pays or he doesn't, and the payment is either prompt or it's not... what else is there? Everything else regarding the transaction is covered by dispute policies, etc.!
Only other thought, should sellers really want the right to comment, would be that both seller & buyer get to leave feedback... but that neither is visible to anyone until both have commented, or until a time limit is up (at which point the sole feedback is posted). In the end, retaliatory feedback IS enough to change their system.
