Google Chrome changes its logo... again! (pictures) (Download Squad)

Mar 25th 2011 12:27PM the previous icon has one thing going for it in that the shading on the green side from the 3d button effect does not visually erode into the blue taskbar (blue and green muddle alot) of the antique operating system xp with the royale theme (with any luck i'll get a new box later this year.) in another sense, this is just a vote on the era of the 3d button icons, which i always thought looked plastic and gimmicky even if i've grown accustomed. on any modern operating system i'm sure the new icon looks better. yay for the next icon style trend! sorry...

Opera enables hardware acceleration, matches IE9, beats Firefox and Chrome (video) (Download Squad)

Mar 1st 2011 11:27AM random thoughts:
funny how opera is described as "other" in hw accel test
shocking how (fast your)/(slow my) pc is
navigator flight demo hard crashed my pc--not even a core dump (xp sp3)

How to back up Gmail to Hotmail or a desktop email program (Download Squad)

Feb 28th 2011 1:30PM i've found local email copies from thunderbird/outlook incomplete due to performance optimizations (for me, only the first X emails per folder were downloaded,) so i would not rely on that backup method without testing. more confusing during actual recovery, "deleted" messages remain in complete form but are tagged invisible until folders are compacted (for me, more variations between pop and imap access.) been awhile since i tried gmail-->hotmail but that wasn't productive last time here. backups are critical, so i hope you're actually verifying these methods actually work.

Ask DLS: What's your primary Web browser? (Download Squad)

Feb 16th 2011 7:20PM primary browser = firefox (4.0b11) because of addons
however, i prefer the chrome ui with winxp, which also feels faster.

re firefox memory: i've cut back on addons which helps (down to 8), but currently i'm very rarely experiencing any memory leak, although i restart every few hours.

i'm hoping to read more on how the 4 stage electrolysis project creates a more robust chrome-like memory model in the accelerated firefox 2011 release schedule.

Firefox 4 beta 11 released, more bugs stomped, beta 12 still to come (Download Squad)

Feb 10th 2011 2:07PM after using 4b11 for a bit and some quick customizing (some of newer ui enhancements seem hackish but it works,) it's replacing chrome as default for now, although there remains a need for better window chrome on xp. i had to remove completely and reinstall, and there's one minor tab issue to be resolved, but overall it's decent. thx!

Firefox 4 beta 11 released, more bugs stomped, beta 12 still to come (Download Squad)

Feb 9th 2011 3:04AM I'd like to see the top right hand side widgets to max/min/close become stylized in XP to look like Vista/7 (or Windows Live Messenger in XP) to save space and look cleaner. I know Fx always does a visual refresh for the actual release, but that would go a long way toward returning Fx to default browser status.

Do Not Track: Analysis of Google, Microsoft and Mozilla's solutions (Download Squad)

Jan 27th 2011 12:20AM first, props for having some thoughtful analysis. +
second, what's to distinguish between chrome brute force blocking and whatever you define as 'curating', a term which you use far too loosely? we all know the chrome api is in it's infancy and it does not take any stretch of the imagination to realize there will be massive refinements.
finally, using an example of your parent company does not help your integrity.
i really, really like dls, but sometimes it's just so ...

Firefox Home Dash experiment offers a radical new UI for your Mozilla browser (Download Squad)

Jan 27th 2011 12:05AM smeared graphics make dls look amateur. if i can't see the point of the image then forget it. seriously.

Adobe initiative to let you easily clear 'Flash cookies' from your Mozilla or Google Web browser (Download Squad)

Jan 14th 2011 3:28AM my bank relies at least in part on flash lso (super cookies) so i use advanced settings in better privacy firefox addon to not erase that. this keeps my bank happy. hopefully chrome will eventually get an addon with similar features.
