Apple finally takes the UK out to the movies (Canada too) (Engadget)
Jun 4th 2008 6:34AM Well, as usual the price is the movie studios doing. I'm sure Apple would much rather sell films for less than it costs to get a DVD - they would sell boatloads of Apple TVs. But that's precisely the reason why the movie studios insist on such silly pricing - to prevent handing all their cards to Apple.
But let's face it - nobody else has a top-to-bottom fully integrated solution half as nice as the Apple one. The movie studios and record companies had all the time in the world to come up with their own solution, and they couldn't do it.

May 29th 2008 7:51AM The beauty of the Objective C method syntax takes a while to appreciate, but you will ! Say you see these two methods in code somewhere:
C style: deliverPizza(x,y,z);
Obj-C style : deliverPizzaFrom:x to:y size:z;
With the C style method call, you either have to remember what the parameters are, or go look it up. With the Obj-C style, the parameters are named as part of the method name. I know, just by looking at that method call, that I'm delivering a Z sized pizza from X to Y. Ok, this is a contrived example, the benefits really start to show themselves when you're calling some of the cocoa methods that have half a dozen different parameters.

May 13th 2008 2:02PM How not to copy the iPhone, part #37:
* black fascia
* chrome bezel
seriously, this is the second iClone that has been on this site TODAY. These guys are stupid, because what does Apple do in June ? Brings out iPhone 2.0 that has a gold bezel (or whatever) and all of a sudden all these iClones look like yesterday's technology.
Can't they see that by aping Apple's design they are in fact just handing their design fate to their main competitor ?
HTC Touch Diamond vs. iPhone, fight! (Engadget)
May 13th 2008 9:00AM Here's my prediction: this will be an lame Windows Mobile phone with an even lamer UI slapped on the top, but will make 90% of Engadget readers believe that it's somehow better than the iPhone because it has a laundry list of features that you don't need and will never use, at the detriment to battery life and/or reliability.
Meanwhile, anyone who points out that the iPhone has the highest user satisfaction rating of just about anything ever made will be shot down by Engadgeteers as an Apple fanboi.
You know, sometimes, just sometimes, when 90% of people say that something is good, and every other company is attempting to copy it - it might just be because it REALLY IS that good.

May 13th 2008 5:28AM Things to avoid if you don't want to be accused of ripping off the iPhone:
* Black front fascia
* Chrome bezel
Philips scores on neither of these points...

Apr 30th 2008 4:12AM ...and while I'm ranting, do these people not think Apple is going to sue the arse off them ? Those UI elements are copyrighted, if not patented, by Apple. You can't just steal someone else's design like that, whether it's a computer UI, the design for a new car shape or a pair of pants. There are laws to protect innovation you know...
These guys are clearly talented, so why not direct those talents in more productive directions than plagiarism ?

Apr 30th 2008 4:08AM Gah ! When well people learn that skinning in interface is not the same thing as actually running that interface. Arguably, the graphical appearance of an interface is the least important aspect of it - what really matters is how it all holds together, it's consistency, how 'deep' the design goes into the system design.
This is exactly the same as skinning Windows to look like Mac OS X.
A polished turd is still a turd.

May 24th 2006 9:49AM "..plenty of Windows only laptops available..."
There's the 'deal'-breaker, right there.
By the way, when did this site start getting written by pre-juvenile children ?
