I would also add that anyone installing gnu/linux on a laptop should gather every bit of info they can on their wireless cards and video cards before they install, especially if they wipe the windows partition. For those wary of messing with partitioning (it can be a bit daunting for someone not used to it), just back up /home/misc_user on a usb key or external hd periodically and use it overwrite the wiped directories if you need to re-install.
