Downloaders Anonymous: My 15 Essential Firefox 2.0 Add-ons (Download Squad)
Nov 13th 2006 7:17PM You probably should mention that some of the extensions on that list don't work in Firefox 2.0 (BugMeNot specifically), and you need Nightly Tester Tools or something similar to make them work.
You got a lot of my favorite extensions, though I have a couple I'd add to the list as well.
Tab History: It's similar to How'd I Get Here, though it's a bit simpler and more integrated. When you open a link in a new tab, it brings the tab history along with it. No more opening a dozen tabs in the background from half a dozen pages, closing the original page, forgetting which page the link is from.

The other one I really like (and I think I read about it here first, actually, is Link Alert.

WebSnapr: Quick and easy web site thumbnails (Download Squad)
Oct 18th 2006 4:16PM It seems pretty cool to me, and I really like that it doesn't rely on Alexa's thumbnails for the images. I bet it won't be long before there is a firefox extension or a greasemonkey extension to use this service on every link.
The only thing I've noticed is that when the site uses some AJAX to load a part of the page, the screenshot is taken before the asynchronous calls return. That could be a pretty difficult fix on their side, though. Maybe it's a faulty implementation of AJAX that is the problem.
Tab completion on the Windows command line (Download Squad)
Aug 8th 2006 1:03PM I discovered this feature completely by accident. After using tab completion for a long time at work when using tcsh on linux boxes, I was at a windows console and tried it without even thinking. Tab completion also works inside the address bar in Windows Explorer, which can be very handy when you don't want to do a bunch of double-clicking.
It does work a little different than tab completion in tcsh, though. In Windows, it tab-completes to the first possible match when you hit tab. In tcsh, if there are multiple possibilities, it only completes to where they differ. If you hit tab again, it will display the multiple possibilities so you can type in a couple letters and finish with another tab-completion.
VMware Server 1.0 now free (Download Squad)
Jul 13th 2006 3:02PM They don't support VMWare Server on XP, but poking around their discussion forums shows that many people have gotten it to work just fine with XP as a host.
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?messageID=371736 and http://www.vmware.com/support/kb/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=911 were both informative. It's worth a try at least.
Windows Live Messenger public beta released (Download Squad)
May 9th 2006 10:36AM I've been using versions of Live Messenger for a few months now, and one thing I hated about it was how crowded it felt compared to Google Talk. I did find a little patch program for Live Messenger called A-Patch which is found at http://apatch.ikhost.com/ which can be used to visually customize Messenger. The interface isn't very clear, but it makes it easy to get rid of a bunch of buttons and ads that were doing nothing but getting in the way.
