Windows Explorer replacements abound (Download Squad)

ActiveWords - The most useful utility I'm no longer using (Download Squad)

Jul 23rd 2006 11:24PM I bought ActiveWords but stopped using it since it doesn't match the simplicity or easy of use as SlickRun which is free. It might not have all the features of ActiveWords, but it also has features that ActiveWords is sorely missing ... like autocomplete.

Mar 30th 2006 1:38AM I forgot one item. I agree with Brian, ActiveWords should blink in red if the ActiveWword was incorrect (See Slickrun).

Mar 30th 2006 12:52AM I would like to see ActiveWords written again from the ground up with a priority on keeping it lightweight and fast. It's amazing what SlickRun can do and it's only 177k. I'm not a fan of having four exe's running for one program. I actually spent more time configuring ActiveWords when I was using it, than I did doing work. I also thought the training mode would be cool, but it just annoyed me after awhile.

My major annoyances are as follows:

- No Drag and drop to add shortcuts, folders or text to Active Words
- No Autocomplete
- Hotkeys are not very configurable
- No Autocomplete (I know it's in here twice, but it's very important)
- Better interface for the Active Words (Explorer / Folder type interface that remembers it's size and position)
- Easy macro making development environment like MacroExpress

My suggestion is to take a look at SlickRun for some ideas. I actually use ClearContext and MindManager, but don't see myself using that them with ActiveWords because I can't remember all the ActiveWords. I usually spend more time looking up the ActiveWords then it would take me to just use my mouse.

I really don't like it when companies don't focus on the basic features (like Microsoft) that you use daily that could really improve the product. It's the simple things that count. Ease of use should be your main focus right now, and I don't think it's there ... yet.

Mar 26th 2006 6:16AM I like ActiveWords, but stopped using it because it doesn't have autocomplete. I'm now using a combination of MacroExpress (for my text and macros) and SlickRun (to run programs and open folders). I'm a registered user of ActiveWords and I'm disappointed on its lack of development. I can't remember the last time a new version has come out (not including the tablet version).

Clean up your Outlook inbox with Speedfiler (Download Squad)

Mar 25th 2006 1:01AM Access Folders is a decent program, but it's defintely not what I'm looking for. I want a program that indexes all your folders (just folders) and allows you to copy/move files easily and jump to folders quickly. Access Folders is just for going to specific folders that you manual setup. I want to jump to any folder or copy/move a file to any folder, quickly and easily by searching for it like SpeedFiler.

Mar 24th 2006 1:40PM Yeah, this is a great program. It makes filing email so much faster. My only wish now is for a programmer to make a similar program for Windows Explorer. I'd love to be able to select several zip files or mp3's and easily move them to an appropriate folder. It would also be really cool to be able to get to any folder really quickly like this program.

Gift Guide: QuicKeys for macros with muscle (Download Squad)

Dec 21st 2005 11:01PM I'ved tried QuicKeys, but really didn't like the interface. I also didn't see an option to create a macro without using a wizard type interface. I also evaluated Automate, RoboTask and Macro Express at the same time and decided on using Macro Express. It was the easiest to use, and had more features for individual users than the other programs. I especially like the feature that allows you to search for commands to add to your macro. The other really cool feature I haven't seen anywhere else, is the ability to set a hotkey or shortkey to select an icon in the system tray.
