With two weeks to go, the 5 best places to follow presidential polls (Download Squad)

Oct 22nd 2008 8:38AM RealClearPolitics has some documented issues in cherry-picking polls in order to show trends they prefer. Instead of them, try pollster.com. My top two are fivethirtyeight and pollster.

Is Buy.com partnership transforming eBay from a marketplace to a store? (Download Squad)

Jul 14th 2008 12:43PM ebay has been transitioning away from the "flea market auction" for some time now, in favor of becoming an online version of an "outlet strip mall". Ebay has adopted policies that make it increasingly unfavorable for the small seller and the "garage store" seller to do business there. This partnership with buy.com is just another step along that road.

UltimateDefrag Optimizes your hard disk for apps you use the most (Download Squad)

May 28th 2008 3:54PM You probably wouldn't like it. Of course, anybody running RAID0 is used to working without a net.

May 28th 2008 3:53PM Reading their "documentation" raises all kinds of red flags. It reads exactly like a used-car huckster wrote it. Often that's a sign of more hype than substance. The defragmenter appears to work well, though the claimed benefits are dubious at best. I also wonder if the defrag program considers block remapping, where a drive reports that it's reading or writing from a certain c/h/s location while physically writing the file where ever it wants to (common on large block devices).

But the display sure is cool looking.

Microsoft: Think twice about IE7 before upgrading to XP SP3 (Download Squad)

May 9th 2008 9:51AM If you're that enamored of IE6 over IE7, you're going to be in a real world of hurt when IE8 comes out this fall.

Instant Memory Cleaner frees up your precious RAM (Download Squad)

Feb 7th 2008 3:41PM Not this "free your precious RAM" garbage again. As much as we rail against Microsoft, they do have some very smart people working on the operating system kernel, and one of the things they have gotten very good at is RAM management. Blindly dumping pages from RAM does absolutely no good whatsoever, and interferes with a system process that already knows what it's doing.

Retract this review, please.

Adobe: 10 years, and all our apps will be online (Download Squad)

Oct 18th 2007 1:42PM Right now, I pay a one-time fee and I have access to the application (and hence my data) essentially forever. If all apps move online, does that mean they move to a subscription payment model? And if I miss a payment, does that mean my data is now held hostage?

Mozilla WebRunner: a one-window, tabless browser with no URL bar (Download Squad)

Oct 17th 2007 11:16AM Does this maintain cookies and other state information independent of a traditional Firefox installation? Do multiple webapps maintain their state independent from each other? One possible application would be to have multiple webapps open to different gmail accounts, which I can not do now with separate tabs in the same Firefox window.
