Classic Shell now makes Internet Explorer 9 look like IE8 (Download Squad)

Apr 6th 2011 12:12PM @this-is-me, on the Windows 7 Taskbar, whether large icons or small icons are chosen, the pinned program buttons are far too wide with too much space in between so the taskbar quickly becomes full. I use many programs and the taskbar is too crowded. Quick Launch is very compact and also separates running programs from non-running ones. So it's hardly the same as the Windows 7 taskbar.

Apr 4th 2011 11:01PM And it's not just about obtaining classic features. The Start menu is far more customizable than the default Windows menu right down to the icon, target and infotip. In fact you can make it exactly like the new Windows menu including the search and hit enter style. For Vista users, it gives the same Start menu search improvements made in Windows 7 such as searching control panel tasks (God Mode). The default Windows Start menu doesn't even allow you to put your own custom folder paths in the right column. And it supports skins too, the smoked glass skin is the best looking skin.

Windows XP Mode coming to Windows 7, could be a game-changer (Download Squad)

Apr 25th 2009 2:07PM This is simply the next version of Virtual PC which adds native host OS integration (removes the desktop and start menu/taskbar from the guest OS). This should in an ideal scenario work with any OS, esp Vista, but Microsoft is trying to sell if off as an exclusive Windows 7 feature for business reasons. VMWare Workstation 6.5 released in September 2008 aleady does this (called Unity mode instead of XP Mode) and isn't locked for Windows 7 hosts and Windows XP guests. Sadly, THIS WON'T GIVE ME BACK THE FEATURES REMOVED FROM WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS 7 WITH NATIVE INTEGRATION. Users will still have to manage and patch this "Virtual XP".

Product review - Microsoft Zune 80GB (hint: it doesn't suck) (Gadling)

Mar 8th 2009 10:26AM The Zune actually isn't bad at all. It does lack a few key features that "the other player's" classic model has but those are acceptable. The accessories are quite few compared to those for the "the other player". The Zune software converts the files but I use MainConcept's H.264 encoder (they discontinued the product later) to encode Zune compliant H.264 Baseline profile videos. The Zune still does not have an equalizer, support for more media formats (FLAC (but WMA lossless is supported-so that's ok), MPEG-4!!! Advanced Simple Profile-DivX-Xvid in AVI is lacking), *video playlists*, voice recorder, Line in/line out (digital input/outputs), open sync protocol (Zune uses proprietary "extension" of Media Transfer Protocol called MTPZ. My sister owns one, I'd jump for it if they added DivX/Xvid in AVI support, an equalizer, video playlists and direct line out to any speaker.

Jan 5th 2008 3:51AM Windows Explorer has an option to do this in folder options called "Launch folder windows in a separate process" and the same can be done with IE if you launch a new window from Quicklaunch instead of Ctrl+N or open in new window.
