Window Vista release will/won't slip further (Download Squad)

May 24th 2006 4:53PM Because of this and other rumors that Vista will be further delayed, I have given up on it and ordered a (white) MacBook. Though I will be dual booting with XP, with out better video power, my new notebook will never get Vista. I am now OK with that.

Maybe Vista will be ready the next time I need a new notebook?

Vista hardware requirements announced (Download Squad)

May 18th 2006 11:44PM Ya, I see this could give Dell a bit of a headache as all their cheap machines start with a pathetic 256mb of ram, which is just enough to start XP. The low low prices will go away for a year or more (but then I am no expert), but that is also the reason for the 'basic' Vista. However, that is a rather poor idea, people are not going to want second best on a new computer. Vista 'light' will be a wreck for MS and any computer companies that try and sell it.

Now, let me count the number of computers I have that will run Vista with Aero, lets see, looks like that comes to 0. Of course, that is just the basic spec, we all know that it is best to at least double the minimum specs to actually get the thing to work. Remember what is was like running XP on a PII 450? Sure it would run, well more like walk, OK, actually crawl.

Is your web site blacklisted by Google? (Download Squad)

May 11th 2006 4:30PM That looks like a nice little app. I design web pages and have been rather neutral when my clients ask about SEOs (I optimise the pages on my own as best I know how, but it is not a main focus of mine). That is until one of my clients used one, they were a disaster, completely mucked up her site. I found one several places where their 'designer' had four nested tables, nothing in three of the 'wrapper' tables and no style, just nesting craziness. Same with spans. They even managed to remover her page titles. I think all they did was put some meta keywords in (that really does not work) and added her to what amounts to a 'web ring' made up of their other clients. With all that, her traffic has actually fallen over the few months she has used them.

She is back with me now.

May 10th 2006 4:43PM If you are also interested in a newer RTS game, have a look at WarZone 2100 which is now open source (http://sourceforge.net/projects/warzone2100/). Set in the future (2100) after an apocalypse, you need to find technology and build it into your army. Your hunt for technology is interrupted by "The New Paradigm" (getting a chance to kill anyone who uses that term is worth playing the game) who try to kill you. But there seems to be a darker force at work behind "The New Paradigm".

I had a problem with saved games crashing the program after the first few missions in campaign mode, but the multiplayer works well.

Batch file-renaming in Windows (Download Squad)

May 9th 2006 1:06PM Don't bother going to lifehacker, here you go: http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk.

Bulk Rename Utility, not a pretty name, but she gets the job done, though a bit cryptic.

Internet Explorer for Linux (Download Squad)

May 8th 2006 8:02PM Too true Peter. And with Dells as cheap as they are, there is no excuse for not having a little Windows box. You may not use it much for testing, so just let it sit in the corner ripping DVDs.

How to ditch the desktop in Windows (Download Squad)

Apr 20th 2006 2:54PM For a quick peak at your desktop, hit the "Windows Key" and the "D" key, all windows minimize, hit it again and all windows come pack. Unless you have a ThinkPad without a windows key, so sad.

Google's push for business (Download Squad)

Apr 17th 2006 7:33PM Yes, they have some good tools, that can only get better but, as you admit, most of your scenario is pie in the sky thinking. Companies don't put that much energy into their web site design and would not integration mean that he would really only use one app to get all these different things done?

Bottom line though is still that any company will only use what its IT staff wants it to use, which is one reason why MS is so strong. They sell to IT. Google will need to offer the same level of training to get any real penetration into the corporate office suite market, IMHO.

Internet Explorer 7 bug reports pile in (Download Squad)

Feb 2nd 2006 8:57PM There seems to be a lot of that going around. I think maybe Google has skewed the way people think of beta releases, that and people just love to hate on MS, as do I, but only when they deserve it. I have been testing IE7 beta without any troubles.
