Happy Birthday, iMac (TUAW.com)
Aug 15th 2008 12:58PM I can't believe it's only been 10 years since the iMac came out. I was stumbling through college when the first one I ever saw showed up in the newsroom from Apple for us to 'test.'
And I can't determine if I should feel old or NOT old. It makes me feel not old, so I'm going to go with that.
Mobile Me appears to be up and running (TUAW.com)
Jul 11th 2008 2:11PM Ditto. With no iPhone, this was the only upgrade to the service (well, that and the extra space) that I was looking forward to!
Firefox 3 download day made possible by Windows (Download Squad)
Jun 28th 2008 3:14PM Could it be that, even though 'Download Day' was postponed until June 17 because of some issues with FF3 and OSX 10.5.3 and fixes needed to be made, no changes actually were made and the Mac version offered on that Tuesday for download was exactly the same as release candidate 3 that, according to Mozilla, had problems?
And it DOES have problems - I am running FF3 both at home on a PowerBook G4 (aluminum) running 10.5.3 and at work on a Mac Pro running 10.4.9, and FF3 probably crashes 4-5 times a day on both systems.
Update, please!
(disclaimer - I don't actually think this affected the download numbers)
Mac 101: Get that "stuck" disc out of your Mac (TUAW.com)
Jun 23rd 2008 6:31PM Here's one that might be a bit more advanced than level 101 ... I've been trying to get a disk out of an iBook G4 for more than a year now. The drive used to be hit-and-miss, but eventually it disappeared - no reference of it even in the System Profiler.
It's getting power, though, because every time the computer powers up or wakes from sleep, the drive will spin the disk for a bit, and then go back to hibernation.
Took it to the Genius Bar once, they couldn't figure it out, either.
Why would an optical drive just cease to 'exist'?
Mozilla struggles with Firefox 3 release (TUAW.com)
Jun 17th 2008 3:39PM I can confirm this, at least for Mac. The version I just downloaded shows exactly the same modified date (06.10.08) as FF 3.0 RC3, which also claimed it was version 3.0.
I think I'll be waiting a few days, since this one is said to have issues with Leopard ...

The small print stinks: No iPod features without service plan (TUAW.com)
Jun 26th 2007 12:25PM If one takes these numbers at face value, i.e. new activation with AT+T, during the 2-year period that works out to about $85 a month.
From where I'm standing, that's a bargain. I have a crappy little Sony-Ericsson phone and a plan that has an average number of minutes, no SMS, no data, and I'm paying around $80 a month just for service!
I need to make a call ...
Grand Central - puts you in charge of all your phone calls (Download Squad)
Mar 21st 2007 8:59PM I've had a GrandCentral account for some time now, but never have done anything with it. I've been seeing stories about it all week (not sure why all of a sudden, but whatevs) and had the idea that I could use it to ring all my wife's phones (home, cell, work) so I didn't have to guess where she was.
I just rang my number, and some guy named Kelly answered. Wha? I checked the account numbers ... they were all right. I'm pretty sure I dialed the right number, because I heard the custom ring tone I set up a while back.
So. Either GrandCentral gave me a number that's already in service, or my wife and I need to have a chat ...
