Sprint's WiMAX service teases EVO 4G-toting New Yorkers (update: LA and SF, too) (Engadget)

Jun 16th 2010 6:41PM @manifest3r 4G is a marketing thing. It's like being able to access a wifi network that covers a whole city. The $10 also means uncapped 3g as well as Wimax so no worries about going over that 5GB cap when you install PDANet or Wireless Tether. Either way, still equal to or less than the cost of other carriers with coverage only beaten by Verizon and even then only in more rural areas.

T-Mobile expands HSPA+ footprint, now covers over 25 metro areas (Engadget Mobile)

Jun 16th 2010 1:15PM @tjrchka Try Sprint. They are the only other carrier with similar pricing to T-Mobile and the coverage is much better. I could see not wanting to go to VZW or ATT due to price and some shady business practices but Sprint and TMo are kinda tied for cost. I wouldn't mind TMo and considered switching for the Nexus One last January but by the time my contract was up, we had the Evo available and I prefer that phone anyway.

Stores open early June 4th for EVO 4G with mobile hotspot loophole (Engadget)

May 28th 2010 11:19AM The idea that this is only a desirable phone if you have Wimax is silly. That's like saying the iPhone is only desirable if you have Wifi around (although with ATT's coverage maybe that would be more accurate). Wimax is an addon. It's a city-wide hotspot. This phone is excellent with or without Wimax.

Engadget Podcast 197 - 05.22.2010 (Engadget)

May 22nd 2010 4:45PM Good Evo review. Still I find it unfortunate that even after such a glowing review, you're like "well, yeah but I wouldn't switch from Verizon". This is why Sprint is doing so poorly despite the best prices and plans available. The whole carrier loyalty thing is why there is no real competition in the market. You can offer the best phone and the best prices and the first 4G and everything but people won't switch carriers? Coverage is not as good as Verizon in rural areas for certain but in cities, towns and along highways it is great. If for some reason you aren't in native coverage you roam free on Verizon. Only time that ever happens to me is in the DC metro tunnels where VZW has an exclusive contract.

Maybe it makes me a Sprint fanboy but I just find it sad that a company's attempt to compete are thwarted by habit and inertia. If someone came out with a better phone/plan/service combo I would switch in a second.

Also as far as 4G, I don't think you would want to leave it on all the time when not using it. It's pointless because you don't need it to get calls or texts or emails. Think of it more like city-wide WiFi that you can toggle on or off when you need it. The little 4G widget makes it simple to turn it on when you are going to stream a video or browse the web the same way you would toggle your WiFi radio or Bluetooth radio when you need to use them.

Sprint HTC EVO pre-orders start this month at The Shack (Engadget)

May 6th 2010 2:09PM @raiden8383 You won't be watching Hulu on your phone. Content providers block anything that isn't a desktop browser. Anyway why would you use a $600 phone to watch Hulu on your TV? Use any cheap old computer hooked up with a video cable.

Sprint and Virgin Mobile announces Beyond Talk $25 prepaid plan, new prepaid brand (Engadget)

May 6th 2010 2:07PM @I Fling Poo Not quite. Eco will have 4G, bigger screen, and much cheaper plans. I would like to see how much Verizon charges for 450 weekday landline minutes, free after 7pm, free weekends, free to all cell phones, unlimited data, unlimited text, and unlimited navigation. Last I looked that was a bit over $80 and much higher than the $70 Sprint charges.

In addition to a better phone and better pricing, Sprint has native coverage second only to Verizon (which does have better coverage in bumfuck boonies) but since Sprint roams for free on Verizon, there is no real advantage.

Add in upgrades every year instead of every two years and I would gladly pay $50-100 more for a specific (better) device and save $30 every month.

Keep on believing what the ads tell you though...it's cool.

Bill Gates: Microsoft pursuing 'a lot of' tablet projects, pen-based input will be 'mainstream for students' (Engadget)

May 4th 2010 12:41PM @betacrater Pen input is an excellent thing and it is the main strength of tablets. I have owned tablets in the past and note taking, drawing, drafting, games, and all kinds of things were awesome with pen input. The downside was you either needed a keyboard attached or docked to do any real typing.

I want to see a tablet with a capacitive screen and an active digitizer for pen input. that way you can type on screen a-la the iPad or HP Slate and you can write, draw, etc. with the pen.

Only people who think pen input are always a fail are selling devices that don't support them.

HTC Legend coming to AT&T, according to FCC (Engadget)

May 4th 2010 12:39PM @Mentat Nah, there were rumors of Sprint getting the Legend as the Hero 2 as a slightly cheaper and less cutting edge companion to the Evo. I had hoped to see the Legend on Sprint this summer so I could get that for my gf when I get my Evo.

Pure's stylish internet radio lineup ships to America on July 1st (Engadget)

May 3rd 2010 2:15PM @Hazdaz Pretty much. I've been listening to Shoutcast stations on my phones since I had my Treo 650. Granted back then I was limited to 96k-128k streams since I was on 2G data but since the move to 3g (soon 4g) devices, I've never lacked for any internet streaming on the road. shoucast.com indexes tens of thousands of free streams and you can find some real gems in there programmed by real people who know and love music...the way radio should be but isn't.

HP and Palm: what happens next (Engadget)

Apr 29th 2010 2:51PM @TheLondonExchange There is no "iPhone 4G". AT&T has not 4G network and will not for a while to come. The only 4G device coming anytime soon is the Evo 4G. If Apple does call it the 4G then they will be misleading. Better to stick with HD or some other descriptor.
